UN-ESCAP - ABU Early Warning Broadcast Media Initiative

UN-ESCAP - ABU Roadshow on Emergency Warning Broadcast System implementation

The ABU with support of UN-ESCAP is organising a Roadshow to spread awareness on Emergency Warning Broadcasting Systems (EWBS) which provides warning to the public about impending natural disasters.

The main objective of the roadshow is to showcase how government agencies and concerned parties including broadcasters can work together to disseminate early warning system through broadcast media.

The Roadshow will travel to six countries around the western Pacific Basin and attempt to conduct a two-day workshop in each country.

Objectives

  • To provide training on how concerned government agencies and broadcasters can work together to disseminate early warning messages.
  • To provide information on the available technologies and technical information in this field.
  • The project will create EWBS awareness among the national nodal agencies in the Western Pacific region and set up an inter-country coordination mechanism.


Demonstration
Efforts made to provide demonstration kits for EWBS system including:

  • EWBS receiver sets
  • EWBS Transmitters
  • Demonstration media on EWBS and early warning coordination
  • Radio-in-a-Box unit for post disaster relief communications

Outcomes Details
Workshop
  • Preparation of disaster recovery manual for use by broadcasting organisations for planning recovery of their services in case of disasters.
  • Development of educational materials to be used in creating awareness in EWBS.
Nodal Agencies Contact
  • Detail planning and reports on focusing how EWBS systems can be implemented in each country and the region as a whole.
  • Identify key recommendations accepted by countries concerned and present them to the high level ministerial conference.
Regional Initiative
  • Report on information of EWBS command centers of each country and focusing effectiveness towards EWBS implementation
