THE THIRD WORLD ELECTRONIC MEDIA FORUM
A new vision of broadcasting in the information society

The 3rd World Electronic Media Forum (WEMF3) brought together broadcast executives, policy makers, academics, journalists, visionaries and decision makers from around the world. They looked at the fundamental changes taking place in the global information society, and discussed how these will affect the role of the electronic media as well as the dissemination of knowledge, economic and business practices, political engagement and other aspects of society.
WEMF3 followed the first and second World Electronic Media Forums, which were held in Geneva in 2003 and Tunis in 2005, in conjunction with the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). The Forums are World Broadcasting Union events and this third Forum was organised by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) in collaboration with the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) and the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC). The event was supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP) as cooperation partners.
Speakers includeed Genichi Hashimoto, President, NHK Japan, and President, ABU; Fritz Pleitgen, President, EBU; Nigel Parsons and Veronica Pedrosa of Aljazeera English; Richard Porter, Head of News, BBC World; Cesar Gerbasi, Chairman, Technical Committee, OTI; Edwin van Huis, President, FIAT/IFTA; Sharmini Boyle, Chief Editor of Young Asia Television, Sri Lanka; Rodney Pinder, Director of the International News Safety Institute; Seema B Nair of UNESCO in India; James Deane of the BBC World Service Trust; and Lieven Vermaele, Technical Director, EBU.
WEMF3 concluded with a series of recommendations including:
A call for greater efforts to preserve the world's endangered audiovisual archives.
An appeal to the United Nations Secretary-General to appoint a Special Rapporteur on the Protection of Journalists in peace and war.
A call for broadcasters to maintain their core values and principles in the face of rapid technological change.
