Showcase of unity and diversity at ABU 2nd International Dance Festival

More than 120 dancers from 12 countries across the Asia-Pacific gave a spectacular display of their art at this year’s 2nd ABU International Dance Festival in New Delhi, India.

The dancers lit up the stage at the Taj Palace Hotel, with their performances broadcast live by hosts Doordarshan and streamed onto the Internet. Several national broadcasters around the region took the live feeds and re-broadcast the evening of music and dance.

The footage was also posted on YouTube, All India Radio streamed the event onto their multiplatform digital network and copies of the recording were provided to all the participating organisations for replay in their home countries.

Ms Supriya Sahu, Director General of Host Broadcaster Doordarshan India and Vice President of the ABU said that after all the hard work leading up to the Festival itself, it was especially heart-warming for all involved to see how the teams bonded together over the time they were in New Delhi for rehearsals and the performances.

“The dancers came from across our region and within minutes they were working and socialising together as if they’d been friends for years,” she said. “Their energy, expertise and charm was a marvellous thing to witness and really underscored the ABU motto Unity in Diversity.”

ABU Secretary General Dr Javad Mottaghi called it a great night to remember.

“The performances were beautiful and the production itself was of great quality,” he said. “Praise must go to Prasar Bharati and all the staff of Doordarshan. The amount of effort they devoted to this event shone through all their production, from preparation through to distribution.

“A very special thank you must also go to Ms Supriya Sahu, Vice President of the ABU, who has led this initiative from its humble beginning as an idea, to the Festival we have enjoyed last weekend.”

The performances were followed by a gala dinner at which Host Broadcaster and Organiser Doordarshan India presented cultural mementos and participation certificates to the groups from RTA Afghanistan; BTV Bangladesh; BBS Bhutan; FBC Fiji, DDI India; RRI Indonesia; TVRI Indonesia; Sarawak Malaysia; PSM Maldives; Radio Tulsipur Nepal; TVTM Turkmenistan and MTRK Uzbekistan.
