The 5th ABU Media Summit on Climate Action and Disaster Preparedness

The ABU high-level regional forum "ABU Media Summit on Climate Action and Disaster Preparedness” moves to Nepal for its 5th edition. The two-day Summit starts on 25 April 2019, the day that marks  the fourth anniversary of the devastating Gurkha earthquake in 2015. The 7.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Nepal's capital Kathmandu and its surrounding areas on 25 April 2015 and was followed by a large number of aftershocks, including one that measured 7.3 on 12 May. Nearly 9,000 lives were lost, more than 22,000 were injured  and the  country left in ruins. 

The Summit is hosted by the Government of Nepal and preparations are led by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technologies and ABU members Nepal TV and Nepal Radio.

Under the theme Media Solutions for Sustainable Future: Saving Lives, Building Resilient Communities over 200 political leaders, representatives of UN agencies and NGOs, climate change and disaster management experts, scientists and media will develop joint practical media solutions for climate change adaptation and disaster preparedness. 

The Summit is preceded by UNESCO workshop introducing its New Handbook for Journalists – Getting the Message Across: Reporting on Climate Change and Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific. The workshop targets journalists, journalism training institutions and educators.

An exciting part of the Kathmandu Summit will be the Gala Awards on 26th April 2019, which will recognize the best programmes on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction.
