UNDRR to Integrate Media in Disaster Preparedness

The United Nation’s agency leading the global efforts for disaster risk reduction, UNDRR, and the World Broadcasting Unions (WBU) are organizing a high level discussion on how to integrate media in emergency warnings for disasters and disaster preparedness. The meeting will be held on 13 May 2019 in Geneva as part of the 6th Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).

Since 2015, the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) have been active and dedicated UNDRR media partners in promoting disaster risk reduction and the implementation of the Sendai Framework —the global plan of action to reduce disaster losses by 2030, among their Members. Through the efforts made, it has been shown how accurate and timely information through tv, radio and printed media can protect populations, better preparing them against disasters and alerting them on increasing disaster risk.

The session will be chaired by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General on DRR, Ms Mami Mizutori. ABU is represented by Mr. Akinori Hashimoto, Executive Controller, NHK; Ms Darin Kumnertrut from ThaiPBS, Mr. Ahmed Nadeem, Director ABU Technology and Innovation and Ms Natalia Ilieva, Head of Secretary-General’s Office.
