This master class for senior and middle level managers has been developed by the ABU in partnership with Università Svizzera Italiana in Switzerland.

In this 90-minute master class , Professor Matthew Hibberd, (Professor of Media Management, Media Economics and Media & Cultural Industries at Università Svizzera Italiana (USI), Lugano, Switzerland) and two panellists who are distinguished CEOs from Asia and Europe: Dr I Hendrasmo (President Director, Radio Republik, Indonesia) and Mr Marcello Foa (former President Rai, Italy), will guide you through strategies on the key leadership and management skills needed as media executives. 

COVID-19 has forced many industries to undergo significant transformation, rethinking key elements of their business processes and use of technology to maintain operations whilst adhering to a changing landscape of guidelines and new procedures. In the past two years, the pandemic has had a devastating impact on media content, production and distribution accelerating market trends prevailing in the past two decades. The post-Covid-19 era will be just as demanding on leaders but there are positive and clear strategies that can transform media organisations. 

The 90-minute master class will focus on:

  • How will the media emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022, 2023 and beyond
  • What will be the key leadership and management skills needed by media executives

Prof. Matthew Hibberd will outline some of the key internal & external environmental issues and main leadership challenges handled by Executives whilst facing a post COVID-19 economic transformation. Leaders are expecting more from their transformation initiatives.

Prof Hibberd and panellists Dr Iman Brotoseno and Mr Marcello Foa will discuss the key issues about what leadership focus ought to be post-COVID, and the direction of media companies.

Prof Matthew Hibberd

Prof Matthew Hibberd, Prof of Media Management, Media Economics and Media & Cultural Industries at Università Svizzera Italiana (USI), Lugano, Switzerland. From 2011 to 2016 Matthew was Head of the Department of Communications, Media and Culture and Professor of Communications, University of Stirling, Scotland, UK. Matthew is a Visiting Professor at the Libera Università Internazionale per gli Studi Sociali (LUISS) and is a Fellow of the College of Teachers (FCollT) and the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).

Competence areas include: climate change; media audiences; media genres and formats; media policy; public service broadcasting.

Matthew specialises in qualitative research methods involving participant or audience interviews and focus group meetings and is co-author of one book on audience methodologies. Matthew is also the author and co-author of a number of books and publications with wide ranging topics from Italian & UK media, climate change as well as impact of video games on children.


Dr Iman Brotoseno

Dr Iman Brotoseno, currently holds the position as President Director Television Public Broadcasting Institution of the Republic of Indonesia, TVRI (2020-2022). Iman is also a well known Indonesian film director, blogger and underwater photographer. To date, Iman has directed more than 1400 creative pieces including documentaries, TV commercials, and music videos. Iman has been in the industry since 1995.


Mr Marcello Foa

Marcello Foa

Mr Marcello Foa, is the former President at Italian Public Service Media, RAI (2018-2021) and is currently teaching Communications and media management at Università Svizzera Italiana (USI). Marcello comes from a print journalist background and has over the years made contributions to many global radio and television networks. Along side Professor Stephan Russ-Mohl, Marcello established the European Journalism Observatory (EJO). Marcello is also the author of several books.
