Course: Six Fundamentals of Screen Adaptation

The Session focused on core and vital ways to engage with source material in order to make successful adaptation decisions. Presented by experts from the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS).

Lisa is the screenwriter and producer of the critically acclaimed international feature film H is for Happiness, adapted from the popular coming-of-age novel, My Life as an Alphabet by Barry Jonsberg.

Lisa spoke about her adaptation process from book to film from the perspective of both writer and producer. In conversation with AFTRS Head of Screenwriting, Pieter Aquilia, they covered the six fundamentals of adaptation – authenticity, theme, character, plot, structure, and genre story worlds.

The session presented a contemporary case study of how to negotiate screen adaptations for a global screen industry, as well as a storytelling toolkit for selling your ideas to an evolving film and television market. There was the opportunity to hear answers to participant questions, from experts in screen business and screenwriting at AFTRS.
