Course: Sound Design & Audio Mixing

This 3 part course is scheduled to start Wednesday 22 March 2023.
Please note that this is not a beginners course.

The 3 part course is aimed at editors and mixers that have been editing for some time, be it in news features, documentaries, dramas, film etc, and would like to be more creative when it comes to sound design and/or audio mixing for the projects that they are working on.

Participants need to be familiar with audio and video editing software, and should have practical experience in using it as this is not a beginners course. Lecturer Chris McKeith will use Pro Tools for examples, but skills will be transferrable to other systems.

Session Topics

Session 1:
Advanced Editing and Mixing
– Organisation, layout and management
– Approaches that suit varying elements including Dialog, Music and Effects
– Advanced mixing tools and techniques – more than a basic eq!
– Delivery items and versions – standards and formats.

Session 2:
Working with Pictures
– Fusing Image and Sound – story, narrative, mood and engagement
– Adding the Image – technical and other considerations including codecs, frame rates, synchronizing, delivery versions
– Variations between “all-in-one” and dedicated Image/Sound workflows
– Working with Surround (spatial) systems

Session 3:
Creative Audio
– Creative Direction – Spotting sessions, the subconscious power of sound
– Style – Drama and Documentary – Film, TV and more
– Creative sound design tools and techniques
– Sound Design – inspiration and experimentation

Lecturer is Chris McKeith

Chris McKeith

Chris McKeith is an experienced sound editor, mixer, educator, facilities designer and audio consultant.

Chris’ experience includes sound design, editing and mixing for a range of short drama films, documentaries and television programs, and he has recorded, and/or mixed orchestral and contemporary music works. Chris was the Head of Sound at the Australian Film, TV and Radio School (AFTRS), and currently runs a music and post production studio.

Chris has used Pro Tools extensively and is a certified Pro Tools Expert, and Master Instructor for Avid. Chris has achieved nominations and awards at the Academy Awards, Motion Picture Sound Editors Awards, Australian Film Institute Awards, the Australian Screen Sound Guild and Australian Screen Composers Guild.
