The Entrepreneurs Handbook – Changing Face of Screen Media Market in the Asia Pacific – ‘Crossing the Chasm for APAC Media Companies’

Presented by Dr Khimji Vaghjiani, Mentor on A.I Ventures Australia and Dr Gerard Reed, Senior Lecturer in Screen Business at AFTRS.

Dr Vaghjiani and Dr Reed explored the opportunities and hurdles of undertaking business in the entrepreneurial markets of the Asia Pacific. As the screen media market grows in terms of both capital and influence, many traditional and new media companies and start-ups will face a future of making some hard choices for what lies ahead.

Dr Khimji Vaghjiani

Dr Khimji Vaghjiani has 30 years of experience in innovation and entrepreneurship having worked across banking, telecommunications, defence, manufacturing, research and development, renewable energy, government and academia, as well as numerous start-ups. As an author, Khimji has written, “Spiritual Journey of an Entrepreneur’. In 2010, he was nominated as Australian Innovator of the Year.

Khimji was previously Head of Growth at Harbour City Labs. Owned and operated by ACS (the professional association for Australia’s ICT sector), Harbour City Labs offers an innovative and collaborative co-working space for Australian start-ups. He was also a Consultant at the NSW – Data Analytics Centre, managing a range of projects looking at commercialisation of data and digital assets.

Khimji has taught innovation and entrepreneurship up to Masters level at University of Technology (UTS) and International Marketing Entry Strategies at the University of Western Sydney (UWS) He has lectured the executive Masters program at Charles Sturt University (CSU) and has taught Engineering at Macquarie University (MQ) and the University of Sydney (USYD).


Dr Gerard Reed

Dr Gerard Reed

Dr Gerard Reed is a Senior Lecturer in Screen Business at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and has experience in economic development with an emphasis on entrepreneurial and innovative screen business practices developed through post-graduate studies at The University of Adelaide’s Entrepreneurship, Commercialisation and Innovation Centre (ECIC), and involvement with the South Australia Department of State Development and across industry. As subject leader for the Master of Arts Screen: Business (MASB), Gerard actively pursues industry related applied technological innovation inclusions for the screen and audio sector, across course materials, and their delivery.

In his professional capacity, Gerard has experience as a producer, director, writer, director of photography, editor, narrator and researcher, for factual programming, with a specialisation in documentary produced formats, across platform and broadcast television applications. He has completed scripting and production for television documentary programming funded by the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC), Screen Australia, Foxtel, A+E Networks International, and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Gerard holds a PhD in Entrepreneurship and a Master of Entrepreneurship degree from The University of Adelaide, Entrepreneurship, Commercialisation, and Innovation Centre (ECIC), a Master of Arts degree from The University of the Arts, London (UAL), and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New South Wales (UNSW).
