56th ABU General Assembly and Associated Meetings

2019-11-17 to 2019-11-22
November 17, 2019

For the 56th time the movers and shakers in the broadcast industry from Asia – Pacific region and beyond will gather for six days of networking, exchange of ideas and discussions on future strategies, joint actions and partnerships. The theme of the conversation this year, “Building Trust: Enriching Audience Experience”, reflects the strong advantage of broadcasters over other media. What is it that only broadcasters can provide to the audience in this changing media landscape? What is our strong point? Broadcasters can provide high-quality “experience” and create new forums for diverse audiences to share those experiences among each other through multiple platforms. We can deliver a more real experience through 4K, 8K and VR, more social experience via social media, public screenings, more secure experience by open journalism and fact-checking and more free experience through Mobile and catch-up viewing services, anytime, anywhere. The road ahead is clear. Re-connecting and serving diverse audiences on multiple platforms is the only way to secure the future of broadcasting in the digital age. The question is how to use the latest technological advancements in media gathering and delivery to make our content and services irresistible and outstanding the test of time.

This year the ABU General Assembly will be held on 21st and 22nd November 2019. The most important governance meeting of the Union will be preceded by the annual meetings of the ABU Sports Group, Radio Working Party, Programme and Technical Committees, while the 8th Women With the Wave Forum, a Quality Management Workshop, Masterclass on Ethical Journalism and the ABU Board Meeting would be held on 19th November 2019.

However, the 2019 General Assembly and Associated Meetings have a unique feature. The host NHK have designed a special event to encourage more interaction and further cooperation between members. Through different formats and platforms, the “NHK Showcase” will provide a glimpse at the Japanese public service broadcaster’s work and achievements – both technological and for engaging the public with relevant, compelling programmes. From showcasing the latest 8K technology to introducing the BOSAI concept and programmes for disaster preparedness, the NHK opens its doors and shares its unique experience with the GA delegates.

NHK will host the 8th ABU TV Song Festival Gala Concert on 19th November, while the winners of the prestigious ABU Prizes competition will be announced on 21st November 2019. The hosts are envisaging a new format for the longest running Radio and TV programmes contest in the Asia – Pacific region to allow for more discussion and showcasing of the winning features.

Our generous hosts are also organising a one-day trip including a lunch cruise along Tokyo Bay that will introduce to the GA delegates from all over the world the past and present of the city that will host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The hosts NHK and ABU Secretariat are urging the delegates to strictly follow the deadline for hotel bookings;
* Please note that the special rates for Hyatt Regency Tokyo is no longer available as the deadline of 15-Aug has passed. However, you can still book rooms but prices will be higher and will be offered based on availability.
For other hotels the deadline for special rates is 15 October 2019. Beyond this deadline the hosts cannot guarantee any rooms or ABU discount rate because there is an acute shortage of accommodation in Tokyo during the month of November.
