AVN Annual Award

The Asiavision Awards promote excellence in journalism by Asiavision members. All items uploaded by members from 01 June 2023 to 30 April 2024 are eligible for the 2024 awards. The awards are presented at a gala event at the annual Global News Forum. 

The categories are:

  • Best news story (up to 4 minutes) 
  • Best breaking news coverage
  • Best disaster coverage
  • Best international news reporting 
  • Best sports report   
  • Best reporting on climate change and sustainable development 
  • Best reporting by a small newsroom 
  • Best coverage of an issue of public interest  
  • Best reporter package
  • Director’s Award for outstanding contribution to Asiavision 

Judging criteria

  • Accuracy of information
  • Newsworthiness and timeliness
  • Quality and relevance of the vision
  • Audience impact

Breaking news should be uploaded less than six hours from the time of the event.   

Members assess eligibility for the small newsroom award themselves but entries may be disqualified if the organisation’s operational scale is deemed inappropriate for this category. 

The Director’s Award for outstanding contribution to Asiavision is presented by the Director of ABU News, for an individual or organisation in recognition of their commitment towards Asiavision.

AVN Monthly Award

The Asiavision monthly award is presented for the best news story of the month. It aims to promote good journalism, media participation and international co-operation. The winner is chosen by AVN editorial staff, and members are encouraged to nominate their choice. The winner is announced in the monthly report sent to members at the end of each month. They receive a certificate with a citation.

The selection criteria are:
News values (significance, impact, timeliness)
Quality (script writing, production values)

 

ASIAVISION MARCH 2024 AWARD
WINNER: KBS, SOUTH KOREA
STORIES ON THE DOCTORS’ STRIKE 

KBS is the winner of the Asiavision award for March, for its comprehensive coverage of the doctors’ strike in South Korea. KBS explained the doctors’ decision to take strike action over plans to increase medical school enrolments, the debate over the quality of medical training and health services in South Korea, the government’s response, the views of police, and the concerns of family members with relatives requiring medical care. Its reports were timely, impartial and gave audiences essential information 

 

ASIAVISION FEBRUARY 2024 AWARD
WINNER: RTM, MALAYSIA
COVERAGE OF SENTENCE REDUCTION ON FORMER PM NAJIB RAZAK 

The winner of the February Asiavision Award is RTM Malaysia for its coverage of the decision to reduce the sentence of former Malaysian PM Najib Razak. He had been sentenced to 12 years jail for corruption in the multi-billion dollar 1MDB scandal. Now, his prison sentence has been halved.

 

ASIAVISION JANUARY 2024 AWARD
WINNER: NHK, JAPAN
COVERAGE OF BREAKING NEWS  

NHK Japan’s coverage of a massive earthquake on the Noto Peninsula on New Year’s Day is the winner of the January Asiavision award. Alerts on the NHK World app were shared with AVN members via WhatsApp, along with vision from NHK’s emergency coverage on the new Asiavision platform APV. NHK has since provided numerous updates to Asiavision members, as the death toll has climbed to 238 and survivors have dealt with power and water shortages.

 

ASIAVISION DECEMBER 2023 AWARD
WINNER: PasifikaTV, NEW ZEALAND
COVERAGE OF COP28 UN Climate Conference 

PasifikaTV delivered comprehensive daily reports, emphasizing crucial issues from both a Pacific and global perspective. PasifikaTV’s coverage stood out for giving a voice to Pacific concerns and resonating with the broader Asiavision community. The team’s ability to blend local insights with a global context was instrumental in highlighting the significant role of the Pacific in climate change discourse. 

 

ASIAVISION NOVEMBER 2023 AWARD
WINNER: VTV VIETNAM
STORIES ON CLIMATE CHANGE

VTV Vietnam wins the November monthly prize for a series of reports on environmental challenges faced in Vietnam. The reports highlighted a variety of issues of local and regional significance, that included management of water resources, environmental degradation, biodiversity protection and carbon financing, and were filed in the lead up to the UN Climate Conference (COP28).

 

ASIAVISION OCTOBER 2023 AWARD
WINNERS: ATN AFGHANISTAN and CCTV CHINA
COVERAGE OF EARTHQUAKE IN HERAT
Ariana TV (ATN) Afghanistan wins the October monthly prize for the timeliness of its coverage of the earthquake that affected 13 villages in western Herat province. Ariana provided members with excellent vision and updates. 

COVERAGE OF ISRAEL-HAMAS CLASHES
CCTV China is a joint winner for its comprehensive coverage of Israel’s response to the October 7 Hamas attack and the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. CCTV provided reports from Gaza, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, giving members broad coverage of the conflict.  


ASIAVISION SEPTEMBER 2023 AWARD
WINNER: CCTV CHINA
COVERAGE OF ASIAN GAMES

CCTV wins the September Asiavision award for its coverage of the lead up to the Asian Games in Hangzhou. This included meeting specific requests from fellow members on coverage of the bilateral heads of government meetings and other events linked to the Games. 

 

ASIAVISION AUGUST 2023 AWARD
WINNER: NTV NEPAL
COVERAGE OF FOOD CRISIS AND FLOODING
NTV wins the August monthly prize for their story on the Upper Dolpa food crisis and flood coverage in rural Nepal. These stories reflect excellent work by a small newsroom covering stories in remote areas and using a range of techniques to maximise engagement.

 

ASIAVISION JULY 2023 AWARD
WINNER: NHK JAPAN
COVERAGE OF FUKUSHIMA WATER RELEASE
NHK Japan won the July Asiavision award for its accurate and comprehensive coverage of Japan’s controversial plan to release treated and diluted water from the disabled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. NHK’s coverage included concerns raised by Japan’s neighbours.

Asiavision Award 2023 winners announced

The winners of the annual Asiavision Awards have been announced at a ceremony in Kuching.

TVRI Indonesia’s Yusuf Ghazali was awarded the Director’s Award, in recognition of his contribution to Asiavision over the past year and the launch of a program dedicated to the work of Asiavision members, “Your World”.

NHK Japan won two awards for Best International Coverage and Best Breaking News.
