Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) is developing dedicated guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in broadcasting, as the technology continues to reshape content creation and media operations. Director-General of Broadcasting Datuk Ashwad Ismail said the initiative is aimed at ensuring AI is used responsibly, with clear guidance for its application within the broadcasting industry.

With AI developing at an increasingly rapid pace, broadcasters around the world are navigating new opportunities alongside questions surrounding its responsible and appropriate use. RTM’s guidelines will take global developments into consideration while being tailored to Malaysia’s own industry, national circumstances and societal needs.

According to Ashwad, different countries are increasingly examining how AI should be governed as its use expands. However, he stressed that approaches cannot simply be adopted wholesale and must reflect the specific needs of individual countries, their industries and their communities.

RTM is therefore assessing an appropriate framework that can provide clear direction for the use of AI within Malaysia’s broadcasting environment. Ashwad shared the initiative while delivering a virtual keynote address at the 10th International Conference on Communication and Media (i-COME’26) in Kuching.

The development of the guidelines reflects a wider challenge facing broadcasters today: how to embrace the possibilities offered by AI while ensuring that its use remains responsible, relevant and aligned with the needs of the audiences they serve.
