Television of the Republic of Indonesia (TVRI) has begun testing 5G Broadcast technology in Jakarta as part of efforts to modernize Indonesia’s broadcasting ecosystem. 

The trial, conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Digital (KOMDIGI) and Rohde & Schwarz, aims to explore new ways of delivering public information through broadcast networks. 

5G Broadcast allows TVRI content to be received on compatible devices without a SIM card, internet connection or mobile data. It can also deliver content simultaneously to millions of devices, making the technology potentially useful for emergency communications during network congestion or natural disasters. 

KOMDIGI emphasized that 5G Broadcast is not intended to replace DVB-T2, but rather complement Indonesia’s existing digital terrestrial broadcasting infrastructure. 

Similar 5G Broadcast trials and demonstrations have been conducted in countries including the United States, Germany, Spain and France, including demonstrations during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
