India’s public broadcaster Prasar Bharati is strengthening its digital presence through WAVES OTT and MyWAVES, extending public-service broadcasting beyond traditional television and radio into streaming, on-demand content and citizen-led storytelling.
Since its launch in November 2024, WAVES OTT has grown to more than 12 million registered users and 15 million downloads. The platform now offers more than 24,000 content titles and 15,000 hours of programming, reaching audiences in over 130 countries and providing content in more than 26 languages.
WAVES brings together television, radio, news, films, documentaries, educational programmes, cultural content and Prasar Bharati’s extensive archives. Audiences can also access more than 140 television channels and 220 radio services, including Doordarshan satellite channels and programming from Akashvani’s national and regional networks. Building on this digital strategy, Prasar Bharati launched MyWAVES in March 2026, giving citizens and emerging creators a platform to produce, upload and share their own short-form, vertical and episodic content.
The initiative is particularly focused on providing opportunities for regional creators outside established media networks. One example is the Gems of India Challenge, which invites creators to produce short videos highlighting local culture, heritage, tourism, traditions, cuisine, innovation and community achievements.
Together, WAVES OTT and MyWAVES reflect Prasar Bharati’s broader shift towards a more digital and participatory public broadcasting model — combining its television and radio heritage with new opportunities for creators and making regional stories more accessible to audiences in India and around the world.
