Bangladesh Television Urged to Prioritise News Relevance and Public Service Broadcasting

21 Oct 2026

Bangladesh Television (BTV) has been urged to strengthen its role as a public service broadcaster by prioritising news relevance, editorial responsibility and programming that serves the wider interests of society.

The recommendations were made during the second meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, held on 13 October 2026 at the National Parliament Building in Dhaka. The meeting was chaired by committee chairman Md Amanullah Aman.

The committee emphasised that BTV should focus on the importance and relevance of news rather than maintaining predetermined proportions of coverage for the government and opposition parties. Significant developments involving any political party should receive appropriate attention based on their newsworthiness.

It also stressed that BTV’s primary responsibility is to serve the public rather than operate as a commercial television channel. The broadcaster was encouraged to establish clearly defined objectives that reflect the social impact of its news coverage and programmes.

In addition, the committee called for the production of informative, educational and inclusive content that appeals to audiences across different political and social backgrounds, while promoting unity and cooperation.

The discussions also addressed broader transparency and accountability within the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, including a review of previously cancelled programmes and initiatives.

The recommendations highlight the importance of maintaining a strong public service broadcasting mandate, with editorial relevance, accountability and audience needs at the centre of BTV’s operations.
