The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has strengthened its national business and financial journalism team with the appointment of David Chau as its new 7PM News finance presenter and Jessica Irvine as Money Correspondent.
Chau succeeds veteran finance journalist Alan Kohler, who concluded his 31-year career with the broadcaster on 14 October 2026. A familiar face to ABC audiences, Chau joined the organisation in 2017 as a digital producer and began presenting financial reports on the ABC News Channel in 2019. Before entering journalism, he worked as a litigation lawyer.
In his new role, Chau aims to make financial news more accessible and engaging, helping viewers better understand market movements, economic developments and their impact on everyday life.
Meanwhile, Irvine will join ABC’s national business reporting team in November, taking on the newly created position of Money Correspondent. An experienced economics journalist and author, she previously spent nearly two decades with The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age and served as National Economics Editor at News Corporation.
Her reporting will focus on the relationship between the economy, business and personal finances, examining how economic policies and financial developments affect Australian households across ABC’s platforms.
ABC Director, News Simon Robinson welcomed both appointments, highlighting their experience in explaining complex financial issues to audiences. He also acknowledged Kohler’s significant contribution to Australian financial journalism over three decades.
The appointments reflect ABC’s continued commitment to delivering clear, accessible and relevant business journalism at a time when economic uncertainty and cost-of-living pressures remain major concerns for Australians.
