KBS Brings 150 Years of Busan Port History to Life Through AI-Powered Documentary

21 Oct 2026

Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) has produced a special two-part documentary, *Busan Port Odyssey*, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the opening of Busan Port, one of South Korea’s most significant maritime gateways.

Produced by KBS Busan, the documentary traces the port’s transformation through the stories of ships, seafarers and communities that shaped its history. Combining historical research with artificial intelligence (AI), the production digitally recreates vessels that no longer exist, offering audiences a glimpse into the port’s maritime past.

Among the highlights is the reconstruction of the historic *Geumgang Maru*, a passenger ferry that operated between Busan and Japan. The recreation draws on original ship blueprints and interior photographs gathered during six months of research in Japan.

The first episode explores vessels associated with migration, wartime evacuations and South Korea’s economic development, including the *Lane Victory*, which helped rescue refugees during the Korean War.

The second episode examines the evolution of container shipping, beginning with the arrival of Busan Port’s first container ship in 1970. It also explores changes in cargo handling, port labour and the future of maritime operations, drawing comparisons with Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

Broadcast on KBS 1TV in the Busan and Yangsan regions on 6 and 7 October 2026, *Busan Port Odyssey* demonstrates how broadcasters can combine archival research and emerging technologies to preserve cultural heritage and bring historical narratives to contemporary audiences.
