The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has outlined its emergency broadcasting preparations for the 2026–27 summer, reaffirming its commitment to delivering timely and reliable information during natural disasters and severe weather events.
ABC’s dedicated Emergency Broadcasting team operates around the clock, working closely with ABC Local Radio and ABC News to provide coordinated coverage of bushfires, floods, cyclones and other emergencies. The 18-member team plays an important role in keeping communities informed before, during and after disasters.
Emergency broadcasting activations have increased significantly, rising from 191 in 2020–21 to more than 650 annually over each of the past three years. During 2025–26, ABC responded to hundreds of fires and severe weather incidents across Australia.
The broadcaster also produced more than 210 hours of rolling emergency radio coverage and over 1,000 emergency-related social media posts during the previous reporting period, demonstrating the growing importance of coordinated public service broadcasting.
ABC continues to collaborate with emergency authorities, community broadcasters and independent media organisations to extend the reach of critical information, particularly to regional and vulnerable communities.
