ABU GA2026 | A New Chapter in Leadership and Regional Cooperation

3 Nov 2026

The 63rd Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) General Assembly and Associated Meetings in Colombo, Sri Lanka, marked an important milestone in the Union’s leadership with the election of a new President and Vice-President.

Hiroo Yamana, Executive Vice-President of NHK, Japan, was elected as the new ABU President, while Chevaan Daniel, Group Director of Capital Maharaja Group/Maharaja Media Network, Sri Lanka, was elected as ABU Vice-President during the General Assembly proceedings.

The elections represent a new chapter for the Union as it continues to strengthen cooperation among its members, advance broadcasting innovation and address the evolving challenges facing the media industry across the Asia-Pacific region.

Mr Daniel’s election is particularly significant, as he becomes the first Sri Lankan to hold the position of ABU Vice-President in the Union’s 63-year history. His appointment marks an important milestone for Sri Lanka’s broadcasting industry and its longstanding participation in regional media cooperation.

The newly elected leadership takes office at a time when broadcasters are navigating rapid technological transformation, changing audience expectations, the growing influence of artificial intelligence and increasing challenges surrounding misinformation and public trust.

Under the theme “Media for Peace and Humanity: Truth, Trust, and Transformation,” GA2026 reinforced the importance of responsible journalism, credible information and meaningful collaboration in building a more informed, inclusive and connected society.

The leadership transition also reflects the ABU’s continued commitment to strengthening its role as a platform for knowledge-sharing, professional development, technological advancement and cooperation among broadcasting organisations.

As the Assembly drew to a close, MTV Sri Lanka ceremonially handed over the ABU flag to RTPRC, host of the 64th ABU General Assembly in 2027, with Shanghai Media Group (SMG) serving as organiser. The symbolic handover marked the transition from Colombo to Shanghai, carrying forward the spirit of cooperation, unity and shared purpose that defined GA2026.

With its newly elected leadership, the ABU looks ahead to another chapter of regional engagement, continued innovation and stronger partnerships across the broadcasting community.
