The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) contributed to regional dialogue on strengthening weather and climate communication through media, with the Head of the Secretary-General’s Office, Ms Nargiza Numanova participating as a speaker at a workshop organised by BBC Media Action under the WISER Asia Pacific Programme.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from the WMO, ADPC, IFRC, UNDRR, IITU, and other agencies and media to explore how communication can be better integrated into Weather and Climate Information Services (WCIS) and Early Warning Systems (EWS), particularly in reaching vulnerable and last-mile communities.

Speaking during the session on regional collaboration, Ms Numanova emphasised the critical role of broadcasters in translating complex scientific data into clear, accessible, and actionable information for the public. The intervention highlighted the need to move beyond awareness towards enabling behavioural change and timely response.

ABU also underlined the importance of strengthening partnerships between media organisations, meteorological agencies, and development partners to ensure that early warning information is not only accurate but also trusted and understood by communities. The discussion further stressed the need to embed communication into national and regional systems, recognising media as a core component of effective early warning frameworks rather than simply a dissemination channel. ABU continues to work with international partners to advance capacity building, knowledge sharing, and policy dialogue in support of climate resilience and disaster preparedness across the Asia-Pacific region.
