Commercial Radio & Audio (CRA) has welcomed proposed reforms from the Australian Government aimed at strengthening the sustainability of Australia’s commercial radio sector and improving the prominence of radio services on smart speakers.
Announced on 5 August 2026, the proposed broadcasting package includes a new radio prominence framework for online simulcasts on smart speakers, alongside measures to reduce regulatory requirements for regional and remote commercial broadcasters. The changes are intended to give broadcasters greater flexibility and support continued investment in regional services.
CRA Chief Executive Officer Lizzie Young welcomed the proposals, highlighting the challenges faced by Australian commercial radio as global technology platforms increasingly influence how audiences access audio and capture advertising revenue.
CRA said the reforms represent an important step towards supporting the long-term sustainability of commercial radio, which reaches around 15 million Australians each week. The organisation also welcomed the Government’s engagement with the sector and indicated that it would continue working with policymakers as the proposed reforms progress towards legislation.
The broader package also includes proposed measures covering television accessibility, community broadcasting and support for First Nations radio services, reflecting wider changes in how Australians consume and engage with broadcast media.
