Free TV Australia has welcomed the passage of the Australian Government’s News Bargaining Incentive (NBI) and News Journalism Payments legislation, describing it as an important step towards ensuring global technology platforms contribute fairly to the Australian journalism they benefit from.

The legislation, which passed Parliament on 20 August 2026, introduces a mechanism designed to encourage major digital platforms to reach commercial agreements with Australian news organisations. Platforms that do not meet the requirements could face a charge based on their Australian digital advertising revenue, with funds raised through the scheme returned to the Australian news sector.

Free TV Australia CEO Bridget Fair welcomed the legislation, highlighting its potential to provide greater support for professional journalism and the news services relied upon by Australians. The organisation said the measures represent a significant milestone in creating a framework that recognises the value of Australian journalism in the digital environment.

The NBI is expected to strengthen the sustainability of Australia’s news media sector by encouraging technology platforms to invest in Australian news content rather than avoiding their obligations by limiting or removing news services from their platforms.
