The Vanuatu Broadcasting and Television Corporation (VBTC) has received new emergency broadcasting equipment from the New Zealand Government, strengthening its ability to keep communities informed and connected during natural disasters and other emergencies.

The emergency kit was formally handed over to VBTC by the New Zealand High Commission in Vanuatu as part of wider support aimed at helping Pacific broadcasters prepare for and respond to disasters affecting their communities.

For a country exposed to earthquakes, cyclones, volcanic activity and flooding, reliable communication becomes particularly important during an emergency. Broadcasters often serve as a vital link between authorities and communities, providing timely information when normal communication channels may be disrupted. The new equipment will support VBTC in maintaining its communication capabilities and continuing to deliver essential information to audiences when it is needed most.

The initiative also recognises the wider public-service role broadcasters play in disaster preparedness and response across the Pacific, where access to accurate and timely information can make a significant difference to affected communities.

For VBTC, the support strengthens its capacity to remain on air, keep audiences connected and fulfil one of public broadcasting’s most important responsibilities: being there for its communities when they need it most.
