Vietnam Television (VTV) has introduced AI-generated Lao subtitles for its VTV1 and VTV4 channels, making Vietnamese television programmes more accessible to audiences in neighbouring Laos.
Developed in collaboration with Star Telecom (Unitel), the initiative enables Lao-speaking viewers who do not understand Vietnamese to follow VTV programmes through Unitel’s digital platform.
The partnership began in June 2026, with both organisations working to develop an AI-powered system capable of automatically translating Vietnamese subtitles into Lao. Following approximately two months of preparation, the technology entered a trial phase.
One of the key challenges was ensuring translation accuracy, particularly given the limited availability of Lao-language data and the importance of preserving cultural meaning. Unitel’s engineering team has continued refining the technology to produce subtitles that are natural, accurate and accessible.
The initiative has received positive feedback from audiences in Laos, with viewers reporting greater convenience and improved access to Vietnamese television content. Looking ahead, VTV and Unitel are exploring AI-powered Lao dubbing as a further step towards improving accessibility and strengthening cultural connections between the two countries.
The initiative demonstrates how artificial intelligence can help broadcasters overcome language barriers, expand their international reach and deliver more inclusive viewing experiences.
