DW Akademie and Radio Workshop Launch Video Series on Audio Storytelling

20 Oct 2026

DW Akademie, in partnership with Radio Workshop, has developed a six-part video training series titled Audio Storytelling – Step by Step, offering practical guidance on creating compelling narrative podcasts and audio documentaries.

Designed for journalists, media professionals, communicators and aspiring storytellers, the series takes viewers behind the scenes of a real audio documentary, providing a step-by-step introduction to the creative and technical processes involved in audio storytelling.

The initiative builds on DW Akademie’s commitment to strengthening media skills and capacity development. DW Akademie has also collaborated with the ABU Media Academy (AMA), including a webinar held in July 2025 on Using the MethodKit for Podcasts, supporting knowledge-sharing and professional development in podcast production.

From Story Ideas to Published Podcasts

Through six concise episodes, Audio Storytelling – Step by Step explores the essential stages of producing a narrative podcast, from identifying a compelling story and conducting research to planning interviews, developing scripts and engaging audiences.

The series covers six key areas:

  1. Find Your Story – Identifying meaningful subjects and developing engaging story ideas.
  2. Research, Research, Research – Building a strong foundation through thorough research.
  3. Pre-production – Planning and preparing for effective audio production.
  4. Interviews – Gathering authentic voices and compelling perspectives.
  5. Writing for the Ear – Crafting narratives specifically for audio audiences.
  6. Publish and Engage – Bringing the finished story to audiences and encouraging engagement.

Learning Through a Real-World Documentary

At the heart of the training series is Copper Town, an audio documentary set in Kitwe, Zambia, which examines the country’s copper boom and its impact on a new generation of Zambians.

By following the documentary’s production journey, viewers gain insight into how research, interviews, editorial decisions and narrative techniques come together to create an engaging audio story.

This case-study approach provides practical lessons that participants can adapt to their own podcasting and audio production projects.

Supporting Media Professionals and Emerging Storytellers

The training series is particularly relevant to journalists transitioning into narrative audio, community and youth radio producers, civil society communicators, and media trainers seeking accessible educational resources.

With its practical approach and real-world examples, the initiative offers a valuable learning opportunity for media professionals looking to strengthen their storytelling capabilities in an increasingly digital and audio-driven media environment.

The series also reflects the importance of international collaboration and knowledge-sharing in supporting the professional development of broadcasters and content creators across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
