Prasar Bharati has released fresh test results for its ongoing Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) broadcasting trials, stating that the technology successfully passed telecom coexistence checks during field evaluations in India. The findings are seen as another step forward in the country’s efforts to develop next-generation broadcast distribution systems.

According to the reports, the D2M technology was tested alongside existing mobile networks and demonstrated no harmful interference with voice calls or SMS services under the tested conditions. The trials involved collaboration between multiple government and technical agencies, including the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), IIT Kanpur, and technology partners supporting the initiative.

D2M technology aims to deliver video, audio, and data content directly to smartphones without relying heavily on internet connectivity or mobile data usage. Industry observers believe the technology could eventually support public service broadcasting, live television streaming, educational content delivery, and emergency communication services, particularly in areas with limited network access or during periods of high mobile network congestion.

The latest test results also come amid broader discussions within India’s broadcasting and telecommunications sectors regarding spectrum allocation, regulatory frameworks, and the future convergence between broadcasting and telecom technologies.
