Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation (B-SAT) is a satellite operator of Japanese broadcasting satellites. B-SAT was established
on 13 April 1993. The headquarters is located at Shibuya, Tokyo. Its capital is ¥15 billion with 300,000 shares.
The main stockholders are Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK) (49.9%) and WOWOW Inc. (19.6%). Its objectives are: Broadcast satellite procurement; control and management of broadcast satellites; supply for basic broadcasting stations; and all operations and business related to the above broadcast satellite services. Its specific operations are broadcasting satellite services, uplinks and generation of electronic program guides (EPG).
The major milestones of B-SAT are as follows:
April 1997 Completed Kawaguchi (Saitama pref.) and Kimitsu (Chiba pref.) Satellite Control Centers.
July 1997 Took delivery of BSAT-1a.
July 1998 Took delivery of BSAT-1b.
November 2000 Completed BS digital broadcast Uplink Center at Shibuya (Tokyo) and Shobu-Kuki (Saitama pref.).
December 2000 Began commercial digital broadcasting satellite services.
April 2001 Took delivery of BSAT-2a.
July 2003 Took delivery of BSAT-2c.
September 2007 Took delivery of BSAT-3a.
February 2010 Began digital broadcasting satellite
services relating to complementary
measures for terrestrial digital
broadcasting in poor reception areas.
December 2010 Took delivery of BSAT-3b.
September 2011 Took delivery of BSAT-3c.
March 2012 Provided services of 39 programs (28
HDTV, 1 SDTV, 7 complementary terrestrial TV, 2 data broadcasting, 1 audio) by using 12 channels of the BSS Plan in the 12GHz band.
