China Media Group (CMG), formally established on April 19, 2018, is one of the largest media conglomerates in the world. It was created through the merger of China Central Television (incorporating China Global Television Network), China National Radio, and China Radio International.
CMG operates a vast broadcasting network, comprising: 47 television channels, of which seven international channels offer content in six languages; 17 radio frequency bands targeting a Chinese audience, and radio programming in 44 languages targeting a global audience; three major news websites, a diverse array of mobile apps, and social media accounts on platforms based both inside and outside China; 17 newspapers and periodicals with a nationwide circulation; a highly effective global news gathering and production network supported by bureaus in 63 countries and regions; and the international news agency CCTV+ providing video news services to more than 3,800 media organizations – radio, television and mobile internet – in 138 countries and regions worldwide.
CMG has built up a comprehensive audio-visual archive containing some three million hours of material. Each day it produces around 1,000 hours of TV programmes and 4,500 hours of radio and online audio content. Xinwen Lianbo, the national prime-time evening news broadcast, attracts an average daily audience of 120 million. Among CMG’s special productions is the annual Spring Festival Gala, a visual spectacular that in 2020 was watched by 1.232 billion people in China and overseas, of whom 606 million accessed it via new media platforms, and generated a record 26.1 billion crossmedia clicks.
As part of its strategic “5G+4K/8K+AI” plan, CMG has established a 5G media application laboratory, a national-level UHD production and broadcasting laboratory, and China’s first 4K resolution satellite TV channel. The successful launch of the country’s first national-level 5G new media platform, Yangshipin. cn, has expedited CMG’s expansion in new media, even as the existing platforms of the CCTV app, CBOX Yangshiyingyin and CCTV.com continue to see steady subscriber growth.
CMG, in working with a multitude of mainstream overseas media institutions, has established varied and broad partnerships in news content sharing, programme co-production, personnel visits, and broadcasting technology exchanges.
