Independent Television Network Ltd was inaugurated on 14 April 1979 as a private company. It was taken over by the government of Sri Lanka on 5 June 1979 and functioned as a government-owned business undertaking. The organisation was subsequently declared a government-owned public company on 27 April 1992, with the General Treasury as the solitary shareholder.
ITN, the first television network in Sri Lanka, presently operates two television channels and two radio channels, transmitting programmes on diverse topics. It is self-financed.
Over the past decade, ITN’s broadcast coverage has extended from a mere 30 percent of the population in 1989 to 98 percent of Sri Lanka’s urban population and 95 percent of the rural area inhabitants, following the installation of a high-powered transmitter at Yatiyantota and the opening of stations in Deniyaya, Nayabedda, Hunnasgiriya, Karagahatenna and Suriyakanda.
