Established on 13 August 1960, public radio broadcaster LNR started out with six employees in two departments: content and technical. At present, the station has 142 employees working in 11 departments. LNR initially operated with only one 500W transmitter, expanding to 10-50 kW (SW), enabling it to extend its coverage to most parts of the nation.
The establishment of the republic has also brought on technological advancement, with the installation of 2kW and 20 kW FM transmitters for its foreign service in 1998.
The station divides its broadcasts into three types: domestic,
foreign languages and public service. Its
domestic service, broadcasting in Lao and minority languages,
transmits on an AM frequency via
shortwave and medium wave.
LNR’s foreign language broadcasts are transmitted on FM and AM shortwave in five languages: English, French, Vietnamese, Thai and Khmer. Its public service broadcast is transmitted via FM, airing from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Its three channels broadcast a total of 78 programmes, aggregating 49 hours of airtime a day.
The station broadcasts a 15-minute news programme in four languages: Lao, English, French and Hmong on the Internet, and since 2000, it has been moving gradually from an analogue to a digital platform
