Maldives
The Maldives Broadcasting Commission was constituted on 22nd August 2010 under Article 3 of the Broadcasting Act (Act number 16/2010) as an independent institution, with members being appointed by President Mohamed Nasheed on 4th April 2011.
The objectives of constituting the seven-member commission include regulating and developing the broadcasting sector in the Maldives and establishing sound regulatory mechanisms for broadcasters with a view to create a conducive environment for developing and expanding the broadcasting infrastructure and services in the Maldives. Also to facilitate and support the professional development of broadcasters in order to enhance and ensure responsible use of the freedom of expression enshrined in the constitution, increase access to information, and foster the growth of a free and responsible media.
A new Board of Commissioners was elected for a five-year term of office by the People’s Majlis and appointed by the President of Maldives, on 5th April 2016.
