The Maldives Broadcasting Commission was formed in 22 August 2010 by the Broadcasting act 2010/16 of the constitution. Maldives Broadcasting commission is a statutory body overseeing all the media. The commission is run by a 7 member commission. The current President is Mrs Maryam Waheedha. The Vice President is Mr Ahmed Gais. The other commissioner members are Amjad Waheed, Aminath Saraahath Izzath, Aminath Ameena, Ali Yoosuf . One member has recently resigned hence, the president’s office has opened the vacant post for the seat and the applications will be submitted and accessed by the parliament. The members are directly elected by the parliament. The admin structure is headed by Dr Mohamed Ibrahim who is the Secretary General).The organization has 3 main departments, planning and policy and HR and admin, and Legal Licensing and Monitoring.
The Maldives Broadcasting Commission oversees all broadcasters by issuing licenses and regulating licenses and plays a central role in promoting democracy in instilling ethics of the broadcasters by conducting training and making regulations of code of conduct. Furthermore the Maldives Broadcasting Commission regulates the rebroadcasters in order for the public to an efficiency service. In order to broaden democracy, in Maldives, the Commission has drafted the community broadcasting and has recently been introduced a pilot project under it.
