MRTV Profile Myanma Radio and Television is one of the departments under the Ministry of Information and being the state-owned broadcaster, it is fully funded by the government. Myanma Radio and Television’s theme is to inform, educate and entertain the public. For the time being, MRTV is now trying our best to transform our content to the public service oriented one. MRTV is comprised with seven divisions, namely: Radio Division, Television Division, Administration Division, Finance Division, Technical Division, Myanmar International Division and Music Division. It operates within the Nay Pyi Taw area in central Myanmar and has about 3,000 employees.
Television broadcasting started its service on the 1st of November 1980 in color. There are altogether 18 free to air TV Channels in Myanmar Broadcast Industry. Among them, MRTV operates six TV Channels such as: MRTV HD Channel, MRTV News Channel, Parliament (Hluttaw) Channel, National Races Channel (NRC), Farmer Channel, and Sports Channel. Another two channels have been cooperating with MRTV are Myanmar International Television Channel (MITV) and MRTV Entertainment Channel. Myanma Radio and Television (MRTV) has permitted the 6 private companies as content providers namely Fortune TV, Channel K, YTV, Family Entertainment Group, Media N Co., Ltd and HEY Play Co., Ltd for digital free-to-air channels in multi-channel playout system of MRTV.
Television Division operates 17 hours a day in Myanmar language. The National Races Channel broadcasts in 11 ethnic languages for a total of 17 hours a day. Radio broadcasting came to Myanmar in early as 1936, and it was later changed to Myanma Athan (The Voice of Burma) in 1946. Now it has been running over 77 years. Myanma Radio broadcasts Myanmar and English programme for 17 and a half hours daily, 14 and a half hours of daily programme for ethnic groups in 17 nationalities, a new As of 12 feb 2024 English-language FM channel called “Myanmar Radio” and Thapyay FM Channel for 10 hours daily.
Nowadays, MRTV broadcasts radio programs in FM mode and total of 84 FM stations established throughout the country with the coverage of 78.88 %. Moreover, digital radio broadcasting has started in Yangon Region since 2017 using a DAB+ transmitter. So far, there are five regional FM broadcasters who are joint-ventured with MRTV.
As of July 25, 2022 Myanmar International (MI), formerly MRTV-3 TV Channel broadcasts free to air 24 hours in a day in English via APSTAR 7 and ThaiCom 6 satellites. MRTV is broadcast nationwide TV with the 258 retransmitting stations in Analogue mode and it can cover to the 92.7% of the population.
MRTV is embracing the new era of innovation and transformation. By harnessing the power of emerging technologies and embracing digitalization and convergence, MRTV launched a web portal in 2013 where the audience can tune in both radio and TV news and programs. In order to attract the active consumers, MRTV initiated and created Audio-Visual content through various platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and Soundcloud. Since our state media could not rely on such platforms, we created MRTV mobile Application. In addition, MRTV broadcasts through other platforms such as Telegram, TikTok, Twitter and viber.
MRTV plans to transform digital according to the ITU and ASEAN guidelines. All 153 relay stations are gradually converted into digital transmission and the coverage has reached 88.7% of the population. Similarly, MRTV implemented DTH on February 1, 2022 to provide access to digital TV.
