Established in 1989, NHK Global Media Services, Inc (NHK G-Media), formerly NHK Joho Network, Inc, is an affiliate of Japanese public broadcaster NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation). It focuses on supporting NHK and its broadcasts, while developing NHK G-Media’s own multimedia services.
NHK G-Media produces news programmes, features and documentaries including HDTV/digital broadcasts in addition to coordinating and operating round-the-clock international transmissions of international news footage and live sports feeds. It also produces live sports coverage of professional sports such as soccer, baseball and sumo, and amateur sports; and negotiates broadcasting rights for various sporting events for NHK.
NHK G-Media provides video and IP multicast services around the globe via its international transmission lines.
Other production services include the development of HDTV, DVD and 3D content and mobile phone-related services; and production, marketing and distribution of inflight video services to airlines. NHK G-Media also operates a translation centre with over 1,000 registered interpreters, who cover over 60 languages. The centre also provides in-house interpretation and translation training courses.
