NHK International aims to promote international understanding and goodwill. To that end, we undertake projects that focus on international cultural communication via television and radio.
NHK International distributes NHK programmes such as the popular Oshin drama series. We provide NHK programmes to recipients of Japan’s Official Development Assistance through public funding such as the Cultural Grant Assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japan Foundation’s Programme of TV Broadcasting Abroad. Last year, we provided 2,506 programmes to 28 countries. That brings our total so far to 66,889 programmes delivered to 139 countries.
We also worked on 296 projects for 16 broadcasters from 13 countries and regions, providing live broadcasts and other transmissions. To further improve its services, NHK International now has a new international transmission studio.
We search NHK’s huge video archives to find the best cuts. So far, 5 million NHK News items and more than 700,000 programmes have been archived. They include important high definition coverage of major global incidents, dating all the way back to the 1980s — since NHK pioneered the development of Hi-Vision (HDTV). NHK International acts as the global gateway for searching swiftly through these archives to find and provide the footage you need.
