Established in 1928, Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), is one of the oldest broadcasting institutions in Asia. As Hong Kong’s sole public service broadcaster, RTHK’s primary obligation is to provide a broad range of high quality and distinctive services through radio, television and new media that serve a broad spectrum of audiences including ethnic minorities. The production of RTHK programmes enjoys a high-degree of editorial independence yet follows a set of professional guidelines under the “Producers’ Guidelines”.
RTHK runs seven radio channels and three digital terrestrial TV channels in Cantonese, English, Putonghua and other languages. To encourage the community, non-government organisations and the underprivileged to participate in broadcasting, Community Involvement Broadcasting Service has run productions by local individuals and organisations, in which 15 broadcast languages were covered. In addition, RTHK website provides radio and TV live webcasts and 12-month online archives. A range of distinctive mobile apps are also provided to facilitate users easy access and sharing of programme contents with their mobile phones and tablet PCs.
RTHK regularly participates in ABU’s programming initiatives, including producers’ meeting, Robocon and programme exchange project “Under the Same Sky”, such that we could understand the culture and livelihoods of different countries, as well as the standard of their programme production. Through attending ABU General Assembly, ABU Administrative Council Meeting and Planning and Strategy Group (PSG) Meeting on a regular basis, RTHK actively shares their views and know-hows in different aspects of broadcasting with the regional broadcasting unions from other parts of the world.
