Established in 1989, STN is the TV broadcast arm of the whollyowned SRBC (Shalimar Recording and Broadcasting Company Limited). STN is self funded and is Pakistan’s first TV broadcaster in the semi-government sector as well as one of the country’s three national broadcasters. It first launched its transmissions from Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan, in 1990.
Twenty STN terrestrial free-to-air TV stations broadcast around the clock from all major commercial cities in Pakistan. It reaches 58 countries via the AsiaSat-3S satellite. The success of STN is attributed primarily to its popular family-based entertainment programmes.
STN’s programming comprises 40 percent entertainment, 37 percent information and 23 percent education programmes. It recently extended its transmission coverage to reach over 50 percent of Pakistan’s population. STN is now broadcasting under a new call sign, ATV.
STN has over 400 full-time staff and over 21 contract employees. In 2009, SRBC established RM radio stations in Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Peshawar. It is looking into setting up six more radio stations across the country.
