The Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association (JBA) (the former National Association of Commercial Broadcasters in Japan or NAB), established as a voluntary organisation on 20 July 1951 by 16 commercial radio broadcasters. It was subsequently officialised as a non-profit incorporated organisation in 1952, and represents the interests of commercial broadcasters in Japan. As of July 2020, JBA has 205 members.
JBA aims to improve broadcasting ethical standards, promote public welfare through broadcasting services and settle common issues among commercial broadcasters, while facilitating mutual understanding and cooperation.
JBA’s main areas of work include: policymaking and recommendations of technical standards, promoting broadcasters’ self-regulation by establishing a set of JBA broadcasting standards for both programmes and commercials, copyright issues as well as labour relations. It also organises the annual JBA Awards.
JBA’s board of directors consists of 45 executives from member broadcasters. 12 standing committees advise the board on specific issues while the JBA secretariat cutes decisions made by those executive bodies. The general assembly is the highest decision-making body. It is held once a year and is attended by all member representatives.
