Vietnam Television (VTV) is a governmental institution which was established on 7 September 1970. It is the sole TV broadcaster that has nationwide reach.
As the leading news and mass communication organisation in Vietnam, VTV disseminates information to the general public throughout the country and to overseas Vietnamese, providing scientific and educational programming to targeted audience groups. It is also an effective channel of mutual communication for over 50 ethnic groups in Vietnam and also bridges Vietnam to the rest of the world. Over the last decade, VTV has diversified its services from television broadcasting as it has embarked on filmmaking, pay TV, Internet and print media.
VTV is operating seven free-to-air terrestrial channels, namely VTV1, VTV2, VTV3, VTV4, VTV5, VTV6 and VTV9. VTV has also successfully developed and maintained a large national transmission network including parallel Digital Ku-Band and C-Band satellite carriages and hundreds of relay stations in order to ensure 90% of coverage of the Vietnamese territory as well as VTV4 reception in most of continents of the world. VTV plans to attain full digitalisation by 2020.
Under VTV, are VCTV, SCTV and VSTV, which are the biggest cable TV and DTH service providers in Vietnam.
