Monday 15 Aug 2011
Pakistan’s national broadcaster, PTV, has launched a news service in the regional languages of Gilgit-Baltistan province, Associated Press of Pakistan reports.
PTV launched the news service in the Shina and Balti languages on 14 August, Pakistan’s 65th Independence Day.
A news bulletin will be aired at 3.45 p.m. regularly and will cover not only regional but national and international news.
Gilgit-Baltistan, formerly known as the Northern Areas, is Pakistan’s northernmost province. It borders Afghanistan, China and Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister, Syed Mehdi Shah, said the new service meant the world would know there was a province called Gilgit-Baltistan.
The service would further contribute to eliminating the sense of deprivation among people in the province, he said.
