The Asiavision award for December 2018 goes to TVRI (Indonesia) for its coverage of the deadly tsunami that hit the coastal regions of western Java and southern Sumatra islands. The tsunami on the night of 22 December was triggered by an eruption on the Anak Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait. Indonesian authorities say at least 430 lives were lost and some 1500 people were injured.

The Asiavision Award for November goes to SLRC of Sri Lanka for its coverage of the ongoing power struggle in the island nation that has crippled the government for more than a month. The political crisis began when President Maithripala Sirisena sacked the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on 26 October and replaced him with former president Mahinda Rajapaksa. Later, the president moved to dissolve parliament but this is being challenged in the Supreme Court while the Court of Appeal is hearing a petition challenging Rajapaksa’s appointment as the prime minister.

The Asiavision Award for November goes to EMTV of Papua New Guinea for its coverage of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit and the storming of parliament by security forces over the payment of allowances related to the summit.
The summit, on 17-18 November, was a gathering of leaders to promote free trade among the 21 Pacific Rim member economies. On 20 November, a group of soldiers and policemen stormed parliament to demand payment of their APEC allowances, but no one was reported hurt in the fracas.

The Asiavision Award for October went to TRT-Turkey for its coverage of the killing of a Saudi journalist in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

Jamal Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, went missing after entering the Saudi Consulate on 2 October.

After weeks of denial, the Saudi authorities admitted that he was killed inside the consulate.

TRT provided up to date coverage of the developments in the case.

The Asiavision award for September goes to NHK-Japan for its fast and comprehensive coverage of the aftermath of Typhoon Jebi which made landfall on September 3 and the Hokkaido magnitude 6.7 earthquake on September 6.

Typhoon Jebi tore through the western parts of the country and left at least 11 people dead and hundreds injured.

The earthquake that jolted Japan’s northernmost main island claimed at least seven lives.

The AVN award for August goes to Televisi Republik Indonesia (TVRI) for its coverage of the multiple powerful earthquakes that rocked Indonesia’s Lombok Island.

The picturesque island was hit by a 6.4 magnitude quake on July 29 and again on August 5 by a 7.0 magnitude quake.

Several aftershocks followed on August 19, including a 6.3 magnitude at midday and a powerful 6.9 magnitude late in the evening.

The number of casualties since the first quake occurred has reached more than 550 with hundreds of thousands more made homeless.

It was the story that gripped the world’s attention and for its coverage, MCOT has earned the Asiavision award for July. The search for 12 young Thai footballers and their coach began on June 23 in a flooded cave in Chiang Rai. The group of 13 had hiked into the Tham Luang cave after football practice but they became trapped by floodwaters. They were eventually found by two British divers on July 2 and they were brought out safely in stages between July 8 and 10. The rescue operation had earlier claimed the life of a volunteer diver.

The Asiavision June award goes to TVRI for its coverage of the capsize of a ferry in Lake Toba on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The KM Sinar Bangun, a 17-metre-long wooden boat, capsized in bad weather on June 19. Indonesian authorities said there were 21 survivors, three dead and 164 others reported missing. Many passengers were believed to have been trapped inside the overloaded ferry and efforts to recover their remains have been hampered by the depth of the lake and the difficult diving conditions.

The Asiavision award for May goes to RTM for its coverage of the 14th Malaysian General Election and the post-election result developments. The 9th May election results saw the Pakatan Harapan coalition coming into power, replacing the long-governing Barisan Nasional coalition. RTM were quick to provide visuals of post-election developments, including the release of Anwar Ibrahim following a royal pardon and Najib Razak presenting himself for questioning at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission headquarters.

The Asiavision award for April goes to KBS-Korea for its coverage of the third inter-Korean summit and the first in 11 years. The summit on 27 April, on the South Korean side of the Joint Security Area, was between South Korean president Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The summit was focused on the North Korean nuclear weapons program and the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. Apart from the summit, KBS had also provided visuals on the preparations as well as post-summit follow-ups.

The Asiavision award for March goes to EMTV for its coverage of the aftermath of the 7.5 magnitude earthquake that hit in the highlands region of Papua New Guinea. EMTV was quick to share the visuals of the aftermath by putting it on Google drive which allowed the AVN Centre to then upload the visuals for members to access. Massive aftershocks had continued to shake PNG’s remote highlands following the 26 February quake. More than 60 people were killed in the quake and its aftershocks.

The Asiavision award for February goes to CCTV-China for its coverage of the powerful earthquake that struck the Taiwan county of Hualien. The 6.5-magnitude quake hit Hualien, on Taiwan’s east coast, late at night on 6 February. It damaged buildings and claimed the lives of 10 people while more than a hundred others were injured and several missing. Search and rescue efforts were hampered by aftershocks which threatened to further destabilize the heavily damaged buildings in the area.

The Asiavision award for January goes to KBS-Korea for its coverage of the blaze that engulfed a hospital in the south-eastern South Korean city of Miryang. At least 37 people were killed and more than 40 others were injured in the early morning fire on January 26. The fire at the Sejong hospital was believed to have started at around 7:30am in the emergency room on the first floor of the main building. The fire was put out in one hour and 40 minutes.

The Asiavision award for December 2017 goes to RTA of Afghanistan for its coverage of a suicide attack at the Tebyan social and cultural activity centre in Kabul. The attack on the morning of December 28 left at least 40 people killed and dozens more wounded. Afghan officials said women, children and journalists were among the dead. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Asiavision award for November goes to IRIB-Iran for its coverage of the magnitude 7.3 earthquake that struck in Kermanshah Province late in the night of 12 November. The massive quake left at least 432 people dead and more than 9,400 others injured. The epicentre of the earthquake was in Azgaleh, a city near the Iraqi border. The earthquake was so massive that many western, southern and central provinces of Iran as well as neighbouring countries also felt the tremors.

The Asiavision Award for October goes to VTV of Vietnam for its coverage of the floods and landslides that hit the country early in the month resulting the loss of life and property. The death toll from the flooding and landslides stood at 72, according to the country’s disaster prevention agency. The northern and central parts of Vietnam were hit the heavy rains brought on by a tropical depression in the first half of October.

The Asiavision award for September goes to RTM-Malaysia for its coverage of a fire at a religious school in Kuala Lumpur which claimed 23 lives, mostly children. The victims of the pre-dawn fire on 14 September included 21 students and two staff members. The fire was believed to have started in front of the door to the students’ hostel on the top floor of the three-storey building. The victims were trapped in the dormitory which had iron grilles barring the windows.

The Asiavision Award for August goes to CCTV of China for its coverage of the deadly 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck southwest China’s Sichuan province. The provincial government said at least 13 people were killed and 175 others were injured in the late evening quake on 8 August. The quake zone sits in a region that has been hit by at least three major tectonic earthquakes and other geological disasters over the past decade. The epicentre of the quake was in Zhangzha Township in Jiuzhaigou County.

The Asiavision Award for July goes to NHK-Japan for its coverage of the unprecedented heavy rains which batter southwestern Japan for days. Parts of Fukuoka prefecture, on the island of Kyushu, were hit by nearly 600 millimetres of rain in two days, about double the amount that usually fall in all of July. The death toll for Fukuoka and Oita prefectures was 16 and over 100,000 residents were ordered to evacuate their homes.

The Asiavision award for June goes to IRIB (Iran) for its coverage of the coordinated twin terror attacks on Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) and the Mausoleum of the late founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini in the capital Tehran. The Deash terrorist group claimed responsibility for the June 7 attacks. At least 17 people lost their lives and nearly 50 others were wounded in the assaults, which involved shootings and blasts.

The Philippines broadcaster ABS-CBN has won the Asiavision award for May for its coverage of the fighting between government troops and the Maute extremists in Marawi City, Mindanao island. Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte had declared Martial Law in the entire Mindanao island on 23 May after government troops clashed with the Maute group in Marawi City. By the end of the month, the Philippines Armed Forces had assured the public that it had regained full control of the city. The conflict left more than 100 people dead and thousands of families displaced.

The Asiavision Award for April goes to MCOT of Thailand for its inspiring human interest story on a man who crafts up his own artificial limbs from recycled materials. Khumpi Nari, 40, of Trang province, lost his two arms and right leg in an operation to save his life following a high voltage accident two years ago. Through trial and error, Khumpi created his artificial limbs from recycled plastic and metal pieces. With his strong will to be self-reliant, he has successfully made artificial arms that can pick up anything.

The Asiavision monthly award for March goes to KBS of Korea for its coverage of the political turmoil in South Korea. The political development culminated in the Constitutional Court, on 3 March, upholding President Park Geun-hye’s impeachment. It was a unanimous decision by all eight judges. This makes President Park the first South Korean President to be removed from office.

The Asiavision award for February goes to RTM-Malaysia for its coverage of the assassination of Kim Jong-nam, the estranged half-brother of North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un. Kim Jong-nam was reportedly killed with a toxic chemical by two female assassins at the KLIA2 airport on 13 February. A number of arrests were made, including the two female suspects. RTM has been providing timely coverage of the still developing incident, including the charging of the two female suspects in court and the order to expel the North Korean ambassador.

The Asiavision award for the month of January 2017 goes to IRIB (Iran) for its coverage of the fire and collapse of the first high rise building in the Iranian capital Tehran. The 17-storey Plasco Trade Center building collapsed on 19 January after it caught fire. A number of firefighters were inside the building to rescue those trapped in the fire when the building collapsed. Iranian authorities said the bodies of two firefighters and four civilians were recovered from the rubble while the number of people injured stood at around 200.

The Asiavision Award for December 2016 goes to MetroTV (METV) for its coverage of a strong and shallow that struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The 6.5 magnitude quake in the early morning of 7 December occurred at a depth of 13 km. The epicentre was in Pidie Jaya region, about 160 km from the provincial capital Banda Aceh. The quake claimed more than 100 lives and at least 1000 people were injured.

The Asiavision Award for the month of November goes to DDI of India for its coverage of the derailment of an express train in Uttar Pradesh that claimed many lives. The Indore-Patna express train derailed near the industrial town of Kanpur in the wee hours on 20 November. A total of 14 carriages crumpled into one another in the derailment, leaving many people trapped inside the coaches. At least 146 lives were lost in the tragedy.

The Asiavision award for the month of October goes to DDI for its coverage of a deadly fire at a hospital in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. At least 19 patients were killed and over 100 others injured in the fire that broke out in the ICU wing of the Institute of Medical Sciences & SUM hospital in Bhubaneshwar in the evening on 17 October. The blaze was suspected to have been triggered by an electric short circuit in the dialysis ward on the first floor of the private hospital and then spread to the nearby Intensive Care Unit.

The Asiavision Award for September goes to CCTV of China for its coverage of super typhoon Meranti which wreaked havoc as it made landfall in southeast China’s Fujian Province. Meranti caused serious damage to trees and water-supply facilities in the province while some 2.6 million households also suffered blackouts. Thousands of troops were deployed for rescue and relief work. Meranti, which made landfall in Fujian province in the early morning of 15 September, was the most powerful typhoon so far this year.

The monthly Asiavision Award for August goes to MCOT of Thailand for its coverage of a series of bomb blasts and arson in several provinces in the south of the country. Eleven bombings and four arson incidents occurred in seven southern provinces during the afternoon of August 11 to the afternoon of August 12. Among the major locations targeted were the resort town of Hua Hin and the tourist destination island of Phuket. The spate of bombings claimed four lives and injured 35 people.

The Asiavision award for July goes to CCTV of China for its comprehensive coverage of the floods due to especially heavy rains in summer in China this year. The floods in north and central China claimed the lives of at least 150 people with many reported missing and causing the evacuation of many thousands others. The worst hit provinces were Hebei and Henan. Typhoon Nepartak, which struck Taiwan on 8 July, also hit China’s east coast a day later, causing widespread damage.

The Asiavison award for the month of June goes to TRT of Turkey for its coverage of the terror attack on Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport. The late evening of June 28 attack saw 41 people killed. The gun and bomb attack at the terminal entrance was carried out by three attackers who arrived in a taxi. The attackers, who all had suicide vests, blew themselves up after police fired back.

The Asiavision award for the month of May goes to SLRC of Sri Lanka for its coverage of the floods and landslides caused by the heaviest rains the island nation has seen in 25 years. The severe weather conditions had been raging since the middle of the month and by its end, the death toll had risen to more than 90 and more than 100 people still missing. Aranayake, in the Kegalle district, was one of the worst-hit villages. Island-wide, more than 185,000 people lost their homes and were given temporary shelter.

The AVN monthly award for April 2016 goes to NHK of Japan for its quick and comprehensive coverage of a series of earthquakes to hit Kyushu island. The first, a foreshock earthquake with a magnitude 6.2 occurred at 21:26 JST on 14 April and the second, a main shock with a magnitude of 7.3, struck at 01.25 JST on 16 April. The two earthquakes claimed the lives of at least 49 people and injured more than 1,000 others. The earthquakes also caused more than 44,000 people to be evacuated from their homes.

The Asiavision Award for the month of March 2016 goes to IRIB of Iran for its quick coverage of a terrorist bomb attack at a court compound in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province in north-western Pakistan. A bomber blew himself up as Pakistan police officers were trying to stop him from entering the court building in Shabqadar on 7 March. At least eight people, including three police officers, were killed and 27 others injured in the bomb attack.

The Asiavision Award for February 2016 goes to TRT of Turkey for its coverage of the car bombing in the capital Ankara that targeted military personnel. In the incident at least 28 people were killed and 60 others injured. The explosion during the evening rush hour on 17 February hit military buses as they waited at traffic lights.

The Asiavision Award for the month of January 2016 goes to MetroTV of Indonesia for its coverage of the coordinated bomb and gun attack in the capital Jakarta. The “Islamic State” (IS) group claimed responsibility for the 14 January attack along one of Jakarta’s main thoroughfares. The overall death toll was eight, including four militants, while the number of injured amounted to more than two dozen people. In follow-up operations, Indonesian police arrested 12 suspects.

The Asiavision Award for December 2015 goes to CCTV of China for its coverage of a landslide of construction waste in an industrial park in Shenzhen. The massive landslide on 20 December buried industrial buildings and worker hostels in the industrial park in the south China city. More than 50 people died in the accident and another 62 reported missing. The disaster occurred when a huge pile of construction waste slid down a hill.

The Asiavision Award for November goes to IRIB-Iran for its coverage of the twin bombings in the southern suburb of the Lebanese capital Beirut. The 12 November terror attacks claimed at least 43 lives and injured 239 others. The terrorist group ISIL (Daesh) claimed responsibility for the twin bombings. The two explosions occurred within five minutes and 20 meters from each other.

The AVN Award for October goes to TRT-Turkey for its coverage of the two deadly bomb blasts at a peace rally in Ankara on 10 October.
The two bomb attacks killed at least 95 people and injured 246 more.

The blasts took place near the city’s central train station.

Several Turkish NGOs had organised the rally with the main train station designated as the meeting place for the “peace march.”

The Asiavision Award for September goes to NHK-Japan for its up-to-date coverage of the aftermath of the tropical storm Etau. Tropical storm Etau made landfall in the Tokai region on 9 September, bringing heavy rain over wide areas of Japan. Weather officials put eastern and north-eastern Japan on the highest level of alert for flooding and landslides amid record-breaking rainfall. In parts of Tochigi Prefecture, over 500 millimeters of rain fell in 24 hours, that is about double the amount that typically falls in the region for all of September.

The Asiavision Award for August goes to CCTV-China for its comprehensive coverage of the warehouse blasts in north China’s port city of Tianjin which killed 139 people and devastated the port area. The warehouse storing dangerous chemicals caught fire at 22:50 on 12 August in the Binhai New Area of the city. The blasts happened at around 23:30, prompting fireballs to erupt from the warehouse. Shockwaves were felt kilometres away, with some residents claiming their windows were shattered. China has taken criminal compulsory measures against 11 officials and detained 12 suspects for criminal offenses over the warehouse blasts.

The Asiavision Award for July goes to IRIB-Iran for its coverage of the nuclear talks that culminated with the Islamic Republic and its latest interlocutors, the P5+1, sealing an agreement in Vienna, Austria on 14 July. Iran and the European Union say the conclusion of the nuclear talks between the Islamic Republic and six world powers marks a “historic day” after more than a decade of intensive talks. Iran and the P5+1 group of world powers concluded talks on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which will put limits on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for the removal of sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

The Asiavision Award for the month of June goes to CCTV-China for its comprehensive coverage of one of the deadliest shipping accident in the country in almost seven decades. Over 450 people were on board when the cruise ship “Eastern Star” overturned in the night of 1 June in the Yangtze River after being hit by a tornado in Jianli County, Hubei Province. There were only 14 survivors. CCTV provided regular updates on the search and rescue efforts as well as the righting of the ill-fated cruise ship.

The Asiavision for May goes to MCOT for its comprehensive coverage of the Thai authorities crackdown on human traffickers. MCOT has been quick to provide visuals since the crackdown began in early May and it has also continued to provide regular updates on the still developing story. The Thai crackdown began following the discovery of graves at temporary shelters in the jungle near the border with Malaysia for Rohingya and Bangladeshi migrants. The crackdown led to thousands of migrants being abandoned at sea in boats. Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand have agreed to provide temporary shelter to the migrants rescued at sea.

The Asiavision Award for April goes to DDI-India for its quick response for coverage of the 7.5 magnitude earthquake that rocked many parts of northern India. The epicentre of the quake, which struck just before noon on 25 April, was near Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Aftershocks and tremors were also felt across the eastern and northern parts of India. The massive quake has claimed around 8,000 lives in Nepal.

The Asiavision Award for March goes to IRIB of Iran for its coverage of the Iraqi army intensifying its fight against the Takfiri terrorists in Tikrit, capital of Iraq’s Salahuddin province. Salahuddin Police Chief Major General Hamd Al-Names says the Iraqi army and popular forces were continuing their operations to take back control of Tikrit on three fronts. Thousands of government troops, Shiite and Sunni popular forces liberated several strategic villages located between Samarra and Tikrit after breaking ISIL’s fortified defensive positions.

The Asiavision Award for February goes to MCOT for its coverage of a massive blaze at a Chinese automobile tyre plant in Thailand’s Chon Buri province. The factory complex became engulfed in flames on the night of February 1. Strong winds saw the fire spreading rapidly to six warehouses storing over 1 million tyres. Fire fighters brought the blaze under control hours later but the factory had been almost completely destroyed. No death or injury was reported in the incident.

The Asiavision award for January 2015 goes to CCTV-China for its coverage of a New Year’s celebration turning tragic. Thirty-six people were killed in a stampede at Shanghai’s Bund area around midnight when huge crowds of revellers gathered to celebrate the New Year. At the height of the flooding in late December, the number of evacuees stood at around 200,000 nationwide.

The Asiavision Award for November goes to CCTV for its coverage of a deadly fire at a food packing plant in east China’s Shandong province. At least 18 people were killed in the fire which occurred in the evening of 16 November. Local authorities in the city of Shouguang, well known for its farm produce, say 13 people were injured in the blaze. Authorities believe around 140 people were at work when the fire broke out at the carrot packing plant around 19:00 on Sunday.

The Asiavision Award for October goes to TVB-Hong Kong for its comprehensive coverage of the occupation of key spots in Hong Kong by activists calling for greater democracy in the Chinese Special Administrative Region. TVB has been offering continuous coverage of the protests which first started in late September. Several clashes have also broken out between protestors and the police in the ongoing occupation of the key spots in the city. The activists are protesting China’s decision to screen candidates for Hong Kong’s 2017 leadership election.

The Asiavision Award for September goes to NHK for its comprehensive coverage of the Mount Ontake volcanic eruption in central Japan. Mount Ontake, which straddles between Nagano and Gifu Prefectures, erupted shortly before noon on 27 September spewing dense ash hundreds of meters into the sky. The eruption claimed at least 57 lives. Two weeks after the eruption, rescuers were still searching for eight missing hikers.

The Asiavision Award for August goes to CCTV-China for its coverage of the 6.5-magnitude earthquake that hit in southwest China’s Yunnan Province. The 3 August quake which struck in the evening with a depth of 12 kilometres killed more than 400 people and a further 2,300 were injured. The earthquake also toppled more than 12,000 houses and displaced some 57,200 residents. Chinese authorities said the quake was the strongest to hit Yunnan in 14 years.

The Asiavision Award for the month of July goes to DDI-India for its coverage of a landslide which buried 44 houses in Malin village, near Pune, in western India’s Maharashtra state. Heavy rains had caused the landslide which occurred on 30 July with around 300 people feared buried under the debris. Two days after the incident, the death toll had risen to 70 and over 100 people were still feared trapped under the debris. Home Minister Rajnath Singh gave a statement in Parliament pledging all possible support to those affected by the disaster.

The Asiavision Award for the month of June goes to IRIB-Iran for its coverage of developments in neighbouring Iraq where an insurgency led by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has seen the terror group wresting control of several towns in the northern part of the country. IRIB has been providing regular coverage of the developments in Iraq. These include Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri Maliki vowing to face terrorism in his country as the army and volunteer forces fight against the ISIL (Daesh) terrorist group in Salaheddin province, north of Baghdad and in Anbar province, west of Baghdad.

The Asiavision Award for May goes to MCOT for its up-to-date coverage of the political turmoil in Thailand which led to a military coup. The long-running crisis had seen Thailand’s Constitutional Court dismissing Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra from office on 7 May on grounds of abusing her power in transferring a public official in 2011. Thailand’s army declared martial law in the country on 20 May and all conflicting parties in the crisis were then invited to talks called by the newly installed Peace and Order Maintaining Command (POMC). The talks were unfruitful and on 22 May Thailand’s Army chief Gen. Prayut Chan-ocha declared a military coup to restore order and push through political reform.

The Asiavision Award for the month of April goes to KBS-Korea for its comprehensive coverage of the Sewol passenger ferry tragedy. The 6,825-tonne Sewol was carrying 476 people when it capsized and sank on April 16. The confirmed death toll now stands at 284, with 20 still missing. Of those on board, 325 were children from a high school in Ansan City in the southern suburbs of Seoul who were on an organised trip to the southern resort island of Jeju.

The Asiavision Award for March goes to RTM-Malaysia for its comprehensive coverage of the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 which went missing on 8 March. RTM provided daily updates on the search for the missing airplane from the day it went missing on the morning of 8 March. Flight MH 370 remains a mystery so far as no debris or wreckage has been found. The Boeing 777 aircraft with a total of 239 people on board was on a Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, China flight. Its last contact with air traffic controllers was at 1.20 am on 8 March off the southern coast of Vietnam over the South China Sea. The plane was believed to have turned back and its flight ended in the southern Indian Ocean, off western Australia.

The Asiavision Award for the month of February goes to NHK-Japan for its coverage of the heavy snowfall that blanketed wide areas of Japan, including Tokyo and its surrounding regions on 8 February. According to weather officials, 27 centimetres of snow fell on central Tokyo, the heaviest in 45 years. The heavy snowfall caused transportation delays and cancellations on 8 and 9 February. The weather paralyzed air, rail and land transport services over the two days.

The Thai opposition launched their attempted “shutdown” of Bangkok on 13 January, occupying key intersections in the capital Bangkok. In the wake of escalating violence amid nearly three months of mass demonstrations, the Thai government on 22 January responded by imposing a 60-day emergency decree in Bangkok and provinces in the vicinity. The country’s advance voting proceeded on January 26 despite anti-government protesters attempts to block it ahead of the 2 February general election.

The protests culminated in Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra announcing the dissolution of Parliament on 9 December and calling for a snap election which has been set for 2 February 2014. In the days prior to the Parliament dissolution, Thai police had on 3 December abandoned their defence of the besieged government headquarters and let protesters enter the compound in a dramatic move to ease tensions after violent clashes.

The Asiavision Award for November goes to IRIB-Iran for its quick response in making available visuals of a terror attack near the Iranian Embassy in the Lebanese capital Beirut. The attack, on the morning of 19 November, claimed the lives of at least 23 people, including the Iranian cultural attaché in Beirut. There were two explosions in all with the first occurring when a bomber detonated his explosives near the gate of the embassy, and the second happening just meters away when a car bomb went off.

The Asiavision award for October goes to NHK-Japan for its quick and comprehensive coverage of Typhoon Wipha which made landfall on 16 October. The typhoon caused flooding, landslides and transportation disruption in east-central Japan. At least 17 lives were lost on the Izu Oshima island which is located off the coast of Tokyo. The downpour on Izu Oshima was the worst in 75 years with more than 800 millimeters of rain recorded in 24 hours, more than double the monthly average.

The Asiavision Award for the month of September goes to CCTV (China) for its comprehensive coverage of typhoon Usagi which hit the country’s coastal provinces, including Fujian, Guangdong and Hainan. Usagi was designated a super typhoon after it passed through the Philippines and Taiwan, and headed for China’s mainland. The typhoon made landfall in south China’s Guangdong Province on the evening of 22 September, causing massive destruction and affecting millions of people. CCTV offered coverage from making preparations to the typhoon making landfall and its aftermath.

The Asiavision Award for August goes to RTM-Malaysia for its coverage of a bus crash near the capital Kuala Lumpur which claimed 37 lives. The passenger bus was heading for the city from the Genting Highlands resort when it crashed at 2.45pm on 21 August. The ill-fated bus, with 53 people on board, went off the road and plunged into a ravine when it was descending the hill resort.

The 6.6-magnitude quake jolted the border of Minxian and Zhangxian counties in the city of Dingxi at 07:45 am on 22 July, killing 95 people and injuring over 1,000 others. A total of 13 counties in Gansu were affected by the earthquake. CCTV provided a comprehensive coverage, with updates on the search and rescue operations.

A fast response on a deadly roadside bomb blast in the restive south of Thailand has earned MCOT the Asiavision Award for June. Rebels were blamed for the 29 June early morning attack in Krongpinang district of Yala province. The bomb ripped through a military truck transporting 10 soldiers. Eight soldiers were killed and two were injured and that two villagers were also injured in the blast.

The fast response of CTN-Cambodia in providing visuals of a building collapse has earned it the Asiavision Award for May. The shoe-making facility in Kong Pisey district about 40 kilometres west of the capital Phnom Penh collapsed at around 7 am on 16 May. About 50 people were trapped inside the single-storey building when it fell but two deaths were later confirmed and 12 people were injured.

IRIB-Iran is the winner of the Asiavision Award in April for its coverage of three earthquakes to hit the country during the month. The first, on 9 April, measured 6.1 on the Richter scale and hit the town of Kaki, some 90 kilometers southeast of Bushehr, killing at least 37 people and leaving more than 850 injured. The second, on 16 April with a 7.5 magnitude, rocked Iran’s southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan near the border with Pakistan causing minimal damage in a sparsely populated rural area. The third, on 18 April, measured 5.2 on the Richter scale jolted Tasouj city in East Azerbaijan province, northwestern Iran, but no casualty was reported.

RTM-Malaysia is the winner of the Asiavision Award for March for its coverage of the intrusion by an armed group of Sulu terrorists from the southern Philippines into Malaysia’s Sabah state. The Sulu terrorists intruded into Lahad Datu in Sabah on February 12 to make a claim on Sabah on behalf of the Sultan of Sulu. After ignoring efforts to get them to leave peacefully, the Sulu terrorists opened fire on the Malaysian security forces on March 1, leading to the authorities launching an operation to flush the terrorists out.

An explosion involving a truck ferrying fireworks caused an expressway viaduct to collapse in central China’s Henan Province early morning on 1 February. CCTV’s quick coverage of the incident earned it the Asiavision award for February. The blast caused an 80-meter-long section of the viaduct in Mianchi County to collapse, sending several vehicles to tumble down from the bridge and claiming nine lives.

The accident which occurred in the early hours of 12 January claimed the lives of at least 31 people. The bus was on its way to Tikapur town when it went off the road and plunged down a mountain slope.

Nine people were killed and three vehicles were crushed when concrete panels fell from the ceiling of a 130-meter stretch of the Sasago tunnel in Yamanashi Prefecture, neighboring Tokyo, on the morning of December 2.

More than 30 lives were lost in the incident when a sleeper coach of the Chennai bound Tamilnadu Express caught fire in the early hours of the morning near the town of Nellore.

The Asiavision Award for June goes to CCTV (China) for its comprehensive coverage of the country’s first manned space docking of the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft. CCTV provided timely visuals of the mission from its launching on 16 June to its return to earth on 29 June. The three-person team on board the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft included China’s first female astronaut.

A manual docking of the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft with the orbiting Tiangong-1 lab module was also carried out successfully during the mission.

The Asiavision Award for May goes to IRIB (Iran) for making available its rushes of a deadly terror attack in the Syrian capital. Dozens of people were killed and many more wounded on May 10 when two powerful blasts rocked Damascus during the morning rush hour. UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan condemned the attacks, which President Bashar al-Assad’s government blamed on “terrorists” and the opposition accused the government of carrying it out.

A massive earthquake struck in the Indian Ocean off Indonesia’s Sumatra Island on April 11 and Thai broadcaster MCOT was the first to provide visuals of public reaction in Thailand to the temblor. This effort by MCOT earned it the Asiavision Award for April. The quake was felt across the south of Thailand and in the capital Bangkok but there was no damage or casualty reported. The 8.6 magnitude quake had also triggered a tsunami alert in many countries in the Indian Ocean region.

TVB provided a steady stream of visuals of the election process, from the run-up to voting day on 25 March and the demonstration that unfolded outside the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai when the election was being held. Leung Chun-ying, who had been leading in the public opinion polls for weeks, is the undisputed winner.

Thai broadcaster MCOT’s comprehensive coverage of a series of bomb blasts in Bangkok has earned it the Asiavision Award for February. The Thai National Security Council believed the bombings on 14 February were not meant to target Thailand. Thai authorities said initial investigations showed at least four suspected Iranians were involved in the bombings. MCOT provided prompt coverage of the incident as well as the follow-ups.

The Asiavision Award for January 2012 goes to IRIB for its coverage of rescue efforts following a passenger boat tragedy in the Persian Gulf off Iran’s southern coast. Iranian officials said the boat was carrying 22 passengers and two crew members from Hormuz Island to Bandar Abbas on the mainland on 21 January when it capsized near the southern Iranian port city. The Bandar Abbas Fire Department rescue team said five people were rescued.

The Asiavision Award for October goes to TRT-Turkey for its quick coverage of the devastating earthquake which hit the country’s eastern province of Van. TRT made available its early pictures of the quake on 23 October via file transfer for Asiavision members. TRT provided follow-ups on the tragedy in which more than 500 people lost their lives. The 7.2 magnitude quake, with the epicentre in Tabanli village, also caused many buildings in Van province to collapse.

The Asiavision Award for September goes to DDI for its comprehensive coverage of the terror attack at the Delhi High Court in the Indian capital. A blast from an improvised explosive device in the morning of 7 September near the reception counter of the court claimed 13 lives and injured more than 70 people. DDI was quick to provide Asiavision members with early pictures of the incident on the same day it happened and followed it up with regular updates.

Three Asiavision members – CCTV-China, NHK-Japan and MCOT-Thailand – have won Asiavision Annual Awards for their contributions to the exchange.

CCTV was named the winner of the award for contributing the most news flashes to the news exchange in the 12 months to May 2010. It wins a prize of US$700.

In a ballot of members at the News Group meeting in Bangkok in August, NHK and MCOT won annual awards for the overall quality of their contributions to AVN. Each wins a prize of US$700

Dennis Anthony Memorial Award

The Dennis Anthony Memorial Award is a trophy for the best news coverage of the year by an Asiavision member. It is offered by CNN and is named in memory of Dennis Anthony, former ABU Senior Officer News, who died in 1996.

Remarkable coverage of the immediate aftermath of twin car bombings in the Iraqi capital Baghdad has earned IRIB the Dennis Anthony Memorial Award for 2010. The attacks left more than 150 people dead. IRIB provided exceptionally well shot footage of the devastation of the suicide attacks. The near simultaneous attacks on the morning of 25 October 2009 targeted the Justice Ministry building and the nearby Baghdad provincial government offices.
