ABU Developing Broadcasters’ Excellence Award

The winner of the 2017 ABU Developing Broadcasters’ Excellence Award was Mr Permadi Kencono Wulan, Head of New Media of Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI). Mr Permadi won the ABU Developing Broadcasters’ Excellence Award for his contribution to new services of RRI. Mrs Sun Suchuan, Deputy Director General, Science and Technology Department, SAPPRFT/RPTRC-China presented the award to Mr Rahadian Gingging, Director of Technology and New Media, Radio Republik, Indonesia.

The winner of the 2017 ABU Broadcast Engineering Excellence was Mr Soonki KIM, Executive Managing Director, Production Technology, Korean Broadcasting System who won for his outstanding contributions to implementation of ATSC 3.0 based Digital Terrestrial Transmission.  Mr Masakazu Iwaki, Head of Human Interface Research Division, Science & Technology Research Laboratories, NHK-Japan and Chairman of the ABU Technical Committee presented the award to Mr Doo-Hyung Kang, ABU Technical Liaison Officer, Korean Broadcasting System who accepted the award on behalf of Mr Kim.

2017 ABU Engineering Industry Excellence Award



The winner of the 2017 ABU Engineering Industry Excellence Award Dr Ahmad Zaki Mohd Salleh, Director of Technical Operations, TV Networks, Media Prima Berhad, Malaysia for his outstanding contribution to broadcast media.  Dr Javad Mottaghi, ABU Secretary-General presented the award to Dr Ahmad Zaki.

ABU Green Broadcast Engineering


There were two winners for the 2017 ABU Green Broadcast Engineering, CCTV-China and Mediacorp-Singapore.  CCTV-China was awarded for converged production cloud platform and Mediacorp-Singapore for environment friendly new broadcast centre.

Best Article Award

The winner of the Best Article Award for 2017 was titled Impact of Interference on Broadcasting Satellite Services in Terms of Increase Rate of Outage Time Caused by Rain Attenuation authored by Dr Kazuyoshi Shogen, B-SAT-Japan, Mr Masashi Kamei, Japan Telecommunications Engineering and Consulting Service-Japan, Mr Susumu Nakazawa and Mr Shoji Tanaka, NHK-STRL-Japan. 

Dr Kazuyoshi Shogen , VP (International Affairs), Corporate Planning Division,

B-SAT (Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation) accepted the award on behalf of the authors which was presented by Mr Sheng Zhifan, CTO, Academy of Broadcasting Science of SAPPRFT/RTPRC-China.

Commended Article Award 1

The winner of the First Commended Article Prize was awarded to Mr M S Duhan of Doordarshan-India for the article titled Structural Mechanics of TV Towers: Strengthening for Hauling up of Additional DTT Antennas.  Mr Sheng Zhifan, CTO, Academy of Broadcasting Science of SAPPRFT/RTPRC-China presented the award to Mrs Supriya Sahu, Director-General of Doordarshan and ABU Vice-President.

Commended Article Award 2


The Second Commended Article Prize was awarded to
Dr Li Leilei, Professor of the Academy of Broadcasting Planning, RTPRC-China for the article titled WRC-19 Agenda Items Concerning Broadcasting Service and ABU Spectrum Issues.  Mr Sheng Zhifan, CTO, Academy of Broadcasting Science of SAPPRFT/RTPRC-China presented the award to Dr Li Leilei.



   

 The winners of the ABU Engineering Awards 2016 were announced
during the Technical Committee meeting on 21 October in Bali, Indonesia.


The ABU Engineering Industry Excellence Award 

was bestowed on Mr Byeong-Ryeol Park 

of Korean Broadcasting System (KBS). 

The Award was presented by Dr Javad Mottaghi, 

ABU Secretary-General to Mr Doo-Hyung Kang 

who accepted the award on behalf of Mr Park.

Engineering Award sponsored 


by KOBA was awarded to co-winners, 
China Central Television (CCTV-China) 
and to the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRIB)


  The ABU Broadcast Engineering 
Excellence
 Award 
went to

MTV/MBC Channels-Sri Lanka.
 The ABU Developing Broadcasters’ 

Excellence Award

was bestowed on Mr Radeep Maharjan 
of Association of Community Radio Broadcasters 
Nepal (ACORAB-Nepal).

 

  The Best Article Award was awarded to NHK-Japan 
for the article titled “Automatic Generation System 
of Japanese Sign Language (JSL) with CG 
Animation of Fixed Pattern Weather Information”. 
Dr Narichika Hamaguchi, Senior Manager, 
Planning Division, Engineering Administration 
Department, NHK-Japan received the prize on 
behalf of his team.


The First Commended Article Prize was awarded to 

Supatrasit Suansook of the National 
Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission,  
NBTC-Thailand who authored “Digital Terrestrial 
Television in Thailand: Technical Aspects”.  
Mr Kachan Kannika of NBT-Thailand accepted 
the award on behalf of Mr Suptrasit Suansook.

 

  Mr Terence Yiu of Phoenix Satellite Television Co Ltd, 

Phoenix TV-Hong Kong received the 
Second Commended Article Prize 
for his article titled: 

HD  Broadcast  Upgrade Project for  Phoenix  TV. 
 

The ABU Distinguished Service Award was awarded to Mr Yasuto Hamada, President,
(NHK Academy of Distance 
Learning), Japan.

                   

             

ABU Engineering Awards – Winners announced in Istanbul


  ABU Broadcast Engineering Excellence Award 

The winner of the 2015 ABU Broadcast Engineering Excellence Award is Mr Seok Doo, KIM, Executive Managing Director, Technology, Korean Broadcasting System.

Mr Seok Doo, KIM of Korean Broadcasting System wins the ABU Broadcast Engineering Excellence Award 2015 for strengthening the terrestrial broadcasting platform and for his contributions to next generation broadcasting development.

 

Among other achievements, Mr KIM established the KBS Broadcasting Equipment Certification Center, constructed a file-based radio production/transmission system, and developed a real-time TV participation service. Mr KIM also carried out the world’s first terrestrial 4K UHD live broadcasting.

 
ABU Engineering Industry Excellence Award 

The winner of the 2015 ABU Engineering Industry Excellence Award is Mr Zou Feng, President of the Academy of Broadcasting Science, People’s Republic of China.

Mr Zou Feng of the Academy of Broadcasting Science, SAPPRFT-China, wins the ABU Engineering Industry Excellence Award 2015 for his outstanding contributions to both the Chinese digital radio industry and terrestrial digital television.

Mr Zou Feng has led the research and rollout of the China Digital Radio (CDR) system since 2007. He was also involved in the research work on testing, coverage and frequency planning of the terrestrial digital TV.

  ABU Developing Broadcasters’ Excellence Award

The winner of the 2015 ABU Developing Broadcasters’ Excellence Award is Ms Lim Soh Kwang, Superintendent Engineer (Head of Technical Services) of Radio Television Brunei.

Ms Lim Soh Kwang of Radio Television Brunei wins the ABU Developing Broadcasters’ Excellence Award 2015 for her outstanding role in setting up a digital archiving media asset management system. 

 

Ms Lim established a dedicated archive section and played a major role in digital migration initiatives, as well as initiating and managing other major engineering projects.

   

ABU Green Broadcast Engineering Award sponsored by  

Radio Republik Indonesia wins the ABU Green Broadcast Engineering Award 2015 for using simple, low-cost technology in launching RRIPlay, an ICT product application.

 

RRIPlay uses an IP VPN network that already existed, along with the existing computer in the studio and facilities that have long been used for RRI’s network infrastructure.


  The winner of the best article award for 2015 is Doordarshan-India for the article titled Experiences of Evolution of Digital Terrestrial Television in India authored by Mr M S Duhan.

Mrs Kiymet Erdal, Chief Engineer, TRT and ABU Technical Committee Honorary Vice Chairman presented the certificate to Mr Suresh Chandra Panda who accepted the award on behalf of Mr M S Duhan.

The First Commended Article Prize was awarded to Korean Broadcasting System for the article titled Real-time 3D Sign Language Avatar Animation from DTV Closed Captions authored by Mr Juhyun Oh, Mr Byungsun Kim, Mr Kisung Yang  and Mr Sungchoon Park.
Mr Dae Hoon, CHOI, Research Engineer, Technical Research Institute, KBS accepted the award on behalf of the authors.

 
The Second Commended Article Prize was awarded to Korean Broadcasting System for the article titled Terrestrial 4K UHD Live Broadcasting of Sports Events authored by Mr Injoon Cho, Mr Byungsun Kim, Mr Sangjin Hahm, Mr Sanghun Kim and Mr Sungho Jeon.
Mr Dae Hoon, CHOI, Research Engineer, Technical Research Institute, KBS accepted the award on behalf of the authors.

 


ABU 2014 Engineering Awards

The winners of the ABU Technical Review Prizes and 
Engineering Awards have been announced

       

ABU Developing Broadcasters’ Excellence Award sponsored by SONY

Mr Lasantha Samaranayake, Director of Engineering at EAP Network Sri Lanka, won the ABU Developing Broadcasters’ Excellence Award for his role in implementing a new frequency reallocation for EAP in a limited time frame and with minimum interference to signals.

Mr Samaranayake received the Developing Broadcasters’ Excellence Award trophy from Dr Javad Mottaghi, ABU Secretary-General, at the ABU Prizes Night held on 27 October 2014 at the Sheraton, Macau.

   
 

ABU Engineering Industry Excellence Award

The ABU Engineering Industry Excellence Award, was presented to Mr Frederico Alexandre do Rosario, Director and Member of the Executive Committee of TDM Macau, for his leadership of TDM’s migration to digital and the implementation of a completely tapeless working environment.

Mr do Rosario received the trophy from the ABU Acting President, Dr. Ahmad Jailani Muhamed Yunus, Deputy Director-General (RTM), at the ABU Prizes Night held on 27 October 2014.

 

 

 

ABU Broadcast Engineering Excellence Award

The ABU Broadcast Engineering Excellence Award was bestowed on Mr Sunarya Ruslan, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of RRI Indonesia, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of RRI and to broadcasting regulations in Indonesia.

Mr Sunarya received the trophy from Dr. Manuel Pires, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Executive Committee, at the ABU Prizes Night held on 27 October 2014.

 

 

 
 


ABU Green Broadcast Engineering Award sponsored by KOBA       

CCTV China was the winner of the ABU Green Broadcast Engineering Award 2014 in recognition of the reduction of its carbon footprint and promoting the protection of the environment through the introduction of its file-based workflow. 

Mr Il-Soo Kyung, Director, KBS-Korea who represented KOBA, presented the award to Dr Mei Jianping, Director Radio and Television of the People’s Republic of China who accepted the award on behalf of CCTV.

            ABU Technical Review Prizes 


     
The winner of the Best article award for 2014 is NHK-Japan for the article titled UHDTV System Colourimetry and Technical Development for its Implementation. 


The authors are Mr Kenichiro Masaoka, Mr Takayuki Yamashita, Mr Takuji Soeno, Mr Yukihiro Nishida, Mr Yuichi Kusakabe, and Mr Masayuki Sugawara of the NHK Science & Research Laboratories.

At the TC Meeting on 24 October 2014, Mr Frederico Alexandre do Rosario, Director and Member of the Executive Committee, TDM and TC Honorary Vice Chairman, presented the certificate to Dr Narichika Hamaguchi who accepted on behalf of NHK-Japan.

At the ABU Prizes Night on 27 October 2014, Mr do Rosario presented the certificate to Mr Masakazu Iwaki, the newly elected TC Chairman, who accepted on behalf of NHK-Japan.

     
     
The First Commended Article Prize was awarded to Television New Zealand for the article titled Technical Aspects of Analogue Switch Off in New Zealand Zealand authored by Mr Wayne Huggard.


Mr Masakazu Iwaki, TC Acting Chairman presented the certificate to Mr John West, Exec. VP Sports, TVNZ, who accepted on behalf of Mr Huggard at the Technical Committee Meeting Opening Session on 24 October. 


 

 

 
       

The Second Commended Article Prize was awarded to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting for the article titled How the ICT Application Can Improve Management of Archiving Systems authored by Mr Alireza Bahadori.  

Mr Masakazu Iwaki, TC Acting Chairman presented the certificate to Mr Hamid Nayeri, Director Technical Affairs and TC Vice Chairman who accepted the certificate on behalf of Mr Bahadori during the ABU Technical Committee Opening Session on 24 October.

ABU Distinguished Service Award 2014

Dr Keiichi Kubota was presented with the ABU Technology’s highest accolade, the ABU Distinguished Service Award.

Dr Kubota, President & CEO of NHK Integrated Technology Inc, was recognised at the opening day of the ABU Technical Committee meeting which took place during the ABU General Assembly and Associated Meetings in Macau, China.

The ABU Distinguished Service Award recognises the outstanding achievements and contribution by an individual to the broadcasting industry.

During his 38-year career in broadcasting, Dr Kubota has made significant contributions in the area of HDTV standardisation.

He was instrumental in advances in the areas of satellite and terrestrial transmission systems, as well as in signal processing for HDTV.

Dr Kubota also played a leading role in the rollout of NHK’s digital satellite broadcasting service and the coverage of the 2012 London Olympics in Super Hi-Vision.
