Sri Lanka’s City-FM to become a trilingual service

The City-FM Service of the Sri Lanka National Radio will become a trilingual service, broadcasting in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages, the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation announced.

The move is in line with the government’s objective of make Sri Lanka a trilingual state by 2021. It aims to promote ethnic harmony between the Sinhalese and Tamil population of the island and protect the peace achieved in 2009 with the defeat by government forces of the separatist Tamil Tigers movement.

The Programmes in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages will initially target the 4.5 million students in the country and will be extended to other listeners s later on.
