Bangladesh’s ETV accused of illegal broadcasts

Bangladesh’s telecommunications regulator is seeking an urgent explanation as to the reasons private satellite channel Ekushey Televsion (ETV) is broadcasting illegally, rapidtvnews reports.

Zia Ahmed, chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), said ETV did not have the required radio equipment licence, and the frequency the channel was using had been suspended.

As a result, the BTRC has served a show cause notice on the broadcaster, requesting a response within seven days.

ETV was the first private terrestrial channel to operate in Bangladesh, but was closed down over license irregularities in August 2002. It resumed operations as a satellite TV channel in December 2006.
