Portugal switches off analogue

Portugal made the switchover to digital TV this week after 55 years of analogue broadcasting, reports rapidtvnews. However, there have been some installation problems, which the government hopes to overcome in the next few months.

The country’s main consumer association, DECO, said the switchover process was imperfect and caused disturbances to users.

With the introduction of DTT, Portugal follows in the footsteps of Spain, France and Germany, who have already carried out the switchover, and is ahead by a few months in Italy, which has plans to make the change later this year.

Pay TV in Portugal is dominated by the cable networks, a sector in which they compete with, among others, the former state operator Zon, and subsidiaries of the major telephone operators Portugal Telecom and Vodafone.
