Bollywood movie breaks record for TV rights

The satellite rights of upcoming blockbuster movie Ek Tha Tiger have fetched its producers Yash Raj Films USD $13.5 million, the biggest amount ever that a Bollywood film has fetched for screening on television.

According to India Today, Yash Raj had already finalised the deal to sell the TV rights of Ek Tha Tiger to Sony about a year ago, when the film was still being shot.

Sony, which has a tie-up with Yash Raj for all its films, has agreed to pay the huge sum because it feels it will recover more than the invested amount through commercials. It would not confirm the terms of the agreement. “The deal has been struck with Yash Raj Films to telecast Ek Tha Tiger, but the amount is probably not as huge as it is being suggested,” said a channel source.

The film stars Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif and is directed by Kabir Khan. Ek Tha Tiger is due for theatrical release on 15 August.
