BBC Worldwide Labs help digital start-ups

BBC Worldwide has chosen six UK digital media start-up companies to take part in the first BBC Worldwide Labs initiative.

The initiative aims to help selected start-ups gain traction and scale by working closely with the BBC for a six month period, with the objective of helping them strike a commercial partnership with BBC Worldwide.

The participants will have the opportunity to work alongside specialists from BBC Worldwide, gaining insight in areas such as technology, content, marketing, sales and distribution, advertising and more. The Advisory Board at BBC Worldwide will also provide advice and guidance for the selected companies.

Jenny Fielding, the head of BBC Worldwide Labs and new digital ventures, said the BBC was initially offering only five places but the calibre of the applicants warranted an extra spot: “I’m excited to announce our finalists and was overwhelmed with the calibre of applicants. It’s made the selection process incredibly difficult — so much so that we decided to add an additional spot.

“The finalists are a fantastic mix of strategically aligned companies in areas ranging from education, cloud delivery, games, mobile, kids and video. The mix of companies and entrepreneurs is exactly what we were hoping for when we came up with the idea for BBC Worldwide Labs. And we even bucked the tech start-up trend as half of our companies have female founders. Now the fun part starts — bringing the vision of Labs to life!”

Fielding says Labs’ goal is to strategically and commercially partner with and support the most innovative up-and-coming digital media companies that are helping to define the emerging digital landscape.
