2012 Technical Awards

ABU ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE AWARDS

The ABU received 15 nominations from members and industry players in 13 countries for this year’s ABU Engineering Excellence Awards.

The Broadcast Engineering Excellence Award recognises outstanding contributions to broadcast engineering and related disciplines. This award is sponsored by Professional Solutions Asia Pacific Company (Hong Kong) (Sony) for the sixth year running.

The Engineering Industry Excellence Award is given for the most outstanding engineering contribution made by an individual in the broadcasting industry in the region.

Nominations were received from Australia, Bangladesh, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Turkey.

ABU BROADCAST ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE AWARD

Dr Kazuyoshi Shogen, Senior Associate Director, B-SAT-Japan. was awarded the ABU Broadcast Engineering Excellence Award. This award recognises contributions of an outstanding nature in broadcast engineering made by an individual in a broadcasting organisation. The Broadcast Engineering Excellence Award is sponsored by Professional Solutions Asia Pacific Company (Hong Kong) (Sony). Dr Shogen received the citation plaque from Mr Chris Grey, General Manager, Broadcast & Content Creation Solutions, Asia-Pacific Division, Sony, Hong Kong. Dr Shogen was presented with the trophy on the ABU Prizes Night by Mr Kevin Tan, General Manager, Sony, Singapore.

ABU ENGINEERING INDUSTRY EXCELLENCE AWARD

Mr James Rodney Santiago, Consultant, ARIB, was awarded the ABU Engineering Industry Excellence Award. The award recognises the most outstanding engineering contribution made by an individual to the broadcasting industry in the Asia-Pacific region.  Mr Seon Kwon Kim, Executive Managing Director, New Media & Technology Division, KBS, presented the citation plaque to Mr Santiago.  Mr Santiago received the trophy on the ABU Prizes Night.

ABU GREEN BROADCAST ENGINEERING AWARD

2012 was the inaugural year of the ABU Green Broadcast Engineering Award that was instituted at the 2011 Technical Committee meeting.  The award comprises a custom made trophy and US$2000 in cash. Seven nominations were received for this new award which is sponsored by KOBA Show (Korea E&Ex). Mr Seon KwonKim, Executive Managing Director, Korean Broadcasting System, was awarded the ABU Green Broadcasting Engineering Award.  Mr Kim received the award from Mr Choong Jin KIM, CEO/President of KOBA Show (Korea E&Ex).

ABU TECHNICAL REVIEW PRIZE FOR 2012

Each year, three articles contributed by members and published in the ABU Technical Review are selected for the Best Article Award prize comprising of a certificate and US$400.00, and two Commended Article award prizes of a certificate and US$300.00 each.  These awards provide an incentive to ABU members to submit contributions to the Technical Review.

BEST ARTICLE PRIZE


The 2012 Best Article Prize was awarded to Dr Ngo Thai Tri, Nguyen Chien Thang and Hoang Thanh Tung of Audio Visual Global JSC, AVG-Vietnam, for the article “The First DVB-T2 Single Frequency Network (SFN) in Vietnam”.  This article appeared in the April-June 2012 issue of the Technical Review.  Mr Nguyen Chien Thang accepted the Best Article Prize during the ABU Awards night on Monday, 16 October.

COMMENDED ARTICLE AWARDS

The first Commended Article Prize, comprising a certificate and a cash prize of US$300, was jointly awarded to Chris Grey and Aaron Hee of Sony Corporation of Hong Kong Ltd, Broadcast & Content Creation Solutions Asia Pacific Division, for the article “HD Imaging Technology” which appeared in the July-September 2012 issues of the Review.

The ABU Secretary-General, Javad Mottaghi, presented the certificate to Mr Chris Grey.

The second Commended Article Prize, was awarded to Garry Kum of Television Broadcasts Limited, Hong Kong, for the article “Metadata Project – TVB Experience” which appeared in the July-September 2012 issue of the Review.  Mr W B Leung accepted the certificate on behalf of Garry Kum.
