NHK to show its annual NY Eve music program in Super Hi-Vision

On December 31st, NHK will publicly screen its annual Red and White Song Contest live, using Super Hi-Vision.

Hugely popular in Japan for more than 60 years, the annual New Year’s Eve event know as the ‘NHK Kohaku Utagassen’ is a music contest featuring top artists competing in two teams – female artists in the Red team and male artists in the White team. This year, a total of 50 artists will take part in the hotly contested ‘Song Battle’.

The public viewings will take place at two venues in Japan: at Tokyo Tower and at one of

NHK’s local broadcasting stations in Yokohama. The public viewings will coincide with the start of the live program at 19:15. NHK invites viewers to come and enjoy this fusion of Japan’s most popular music show and future television technology, which will bring to life all the excitement and passion of a thrilling event delivered live from NHK Hall.

Super Hi-Vision is a next-generation television system. It features ultra-high-definition images with 16 times the number of pixels of conventional HD, and stunning 3D sound using a 22.2 multichannel sound system. Super Hi-Vision creates an immersive viewing experience, making the viewers feel like they are actually there and seated among the audience.
