ABC Radio to celebrate International Women’s Day with a digital pop-up

To commemorate International Women’s Day 2013, ABC Radio has created a special digital radio station Coming Out, Again on ABC Extra. The station will feature current ABC Radio presenters looking back on the legacy of the ground-breaking series The Coming Out Show, which first hit the airwaves in 1975.

Coming Out, Again on ABC Extra begins at 4pm on Tuesday 5 March and will be introduced by Australia’s Minister for Health Tanya Plibersek, and Julie Rigg, one of the founding producers on the show.

The five days of broadcasts will feature contemporary ABC Radio presenters, introducing shows from the original series, giving them a modern day perspective.

The Coming Out Show was a weekly program made by the Australian Women’s Broadcasting Cooperative set up by the ABC to commemorate the United Nations International Women’s Year in 1975.  Over its 20 years on air the program covered topics such as open adoptions, abortion law reform, the politics of rape and women in prison. The Cooperative was open to all women working in the ABC who wanted to learn radio skills, kick starting the radio careers of many of the ABC’s leading presenters and staffers.

Coming Out, Again will be broadcast from 4pm on Tuesday 5 March to 4pm on Sunday 10 March on ABC Extra is on Digital Radio, the ABC Radio Mobile App or streamed online at abc.net.au/digitalradio
